Coach Wannstedt Press Conference

Sept. 29, 2008

USF Week

On USF:

“Obviously with a short week, we came in early yesterday (Sunday) and worked in our preparation for South Florida. I think everybody who’s been around and watched South Florida play, knows how talented they are. They have a great defense — the top rushing defense in our conference right now. They also have, in my opinion, the top quarterback in our conference. Matt Grothe is playing extremely well. He has great athletic ability combined with experience. When you look at the statistics you don’t necessarily see one particular receiver or back with big numbers but that’s because they do a really good job of spreading the ball around. They’ve had 14 different receivers and eight running backs so they put the ball in everybody’s hands. It’s different than what we’ve seen so far and it will be a challenge but we know that. I think South Florida was the number one team in the nation in terms of home attendance increase from one year to the next (in 2007). With it being a Thursday night game in front of a full house, it will be an exciting atmosphere and our kids are looking forward to it. We’re not where we need to be but we’re inching our way closer. We haven’t gone backwards so as long as we keep moving forward and keep a good attitude then I’ll be happy.”

On containing Matt Grothe:

“Last year we had a defensive mistake and busted a coverage which allowed him to run for a big touchdown and the other time (in 2006) it was just a great effort on his part (when he broke free of a sack). I think he’s quicker this year.”

On handling USF’s defense:

“It all comes down to the concept that we need to continue to play smart. The last time we played down there, we made a lot of mistakes and took key penalties. We need to improve on third down conversions. We haven’t done a good job the last two weeks in third-and-short and that’s going to be a key in this game.”

On South Florida defensive end George Selvie:

“He’s got tremendous speed. He’s a great player and our guys know that. We’ve got to account for him and know where he’s at.”

On comparing the talent of Pitt and South Florida:

“I think it depends on the position. In some areas they have a little more experience than we do but at the same time I like some of our matchups. Without getting too in-detail about this, you look at Matt Grothe and he’s a three-year starter and all-conference player against Bill (Stull) being a first year starter — so a lot of it is experience as opposed to talent.”

On the focus for the game against South Florida:

“The focus of our team is to go down there and try to be the best team for three hours. Just like I told our guys against West Virginia last year, don’t look at the scoreboard, just try and be the best team. We’re not going to get caught up in the rankings because it’s just too early in the year to do that.”

very neutral, non-antagonistic comments.  Smartly played...

Did not want to give us locker room material to banter about....

Do you think he would like it if we brought signs to the game with Pornstache on them????  Jut a sign idea...

Think Matt might object to the referral as to talent????

They are going to pound the ball up our gut all game... when we bring our safeties up, they'll then hit the soft spots over the top. Be prepared for the second coming of Ray Rice this week. This game is one to worry about if we don't jump on them early. I friggen hate Pitt!

I was trying to figure out if he was calling Grothe experienced but not talented... The other way around doesn't make sense. WTF did the stash say?

I think the point Stache was trying to make is that at some positions it's experience that is the difference, not talent.  As in if players have equal talent the one with more experience has an advantage.  He wasn't saying Grothe lacks talent.

It seemed like that's where he was going with it... But why did he use those two players to contrast it? It doesn't make sense. He's saying one has talent and one has experience, but it isn't clear who he is talking about. Do you have his direct line?

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
