How about the hands to the head personal foul that replay showed we only got the shoulder pads, or the late hit out of bounds when contact was first made while in bounds and of course the PJ fumble who's arm was clearly in a throwing motion and should have been an incomplete pass.

Does anyone know what the finally tally of penalties on USF was?

USF set a new record with 18 penalties for 164 yards (17 for 158yds vs UCONN 10/13/01).

It places second in total penaties for a USF game with a combined 28 penalties for 268 yards (29 for 279yds vs UCONN 10/13/01).

Here is the penalty breakdown since 2001.

2001 USF Avg 10.00 penalties for 83.00 yards

2001 Opp Avg 9.82 penalties for 82.09 yards

2002 USF Avg 11.64 penalties for 98.73 yards

2002 Opp Avg 7.27 penalties for 60.36 yards

2003 USF Avg 9.36 penalties for 83.00 yards

2003 Opp Avg 6.27 penalties for 47.91 yards

2004 USF 12.67 penalties for 107.33 yards

2004 Opp 6.67 penalties for 54.67 yards

The Bulls are on pace this year to break the 2002 record for penalties and penalty yardage.

A couple times, yes.

There were some really bad phatom calls though...2 off the top of my head on balls that were 4 yds out of bounds. one in the endzone, and the one on the sidelines that they called on jenkins...

Shoop...

From the 2004 NCAA Rule book:

Defensive pass interference is contact beyond the neutral zone by a Team B player whose intent to impede an eligible opponent is obvious and it could prevent the opponent the opportunity of receiving a catchable forward pass. When in question, a legal forward pass is catchable.  Defensive pass interference occurs only after a legal forward pass is thrown. It is not defensive pass interference (A.R. 7-3-8-I, IV, V, IX-XI,

XIV and XV):

1. When, after the snap, opposing players immediately charge and establish contact with opponents at a point that is within one yard beyond the neutral zone.

2. When two or more eligible players are making a simultaneous and bona fide attempt to reach, catch or bat the pass. Eligible players of either team have equal rights to the ball (A.R. 7-3-8-XII).

3. When a Team B player legally contacts an opponent before the pass is thrown (A.R. 7-3-8-XIII).

The call on Jenkins was the same as the call for OSU to beat Miami a couple of years ago... it was interference early in the pass (he got in the receivers way, kinda held him back), not when the pass got closer to them.

The only penalty I thought was questionable was the roughing the passer call on Kobel - for what appeared to be "phantom" blow to the head.  But the replay wasn't 100% sure - there may have been some accidental contact, and a better angle might have shown it.

The Kobel call was a horrendous call and could have cost USF the game if not for the blocked FG.  The other calls seemed legit.

The reputation USF is earning with the refs is not helping.  Young players make mistakes, and we will likely see a lot of penalties for the next couple of years until the young talent matures.  Sure wish CJL could do something to limit penalties, though.  It will cost USF a game eventually.

I think we have a reputation for being a highly penalized team and the refs know that comming in so they are looking to drop flags all night

The officials should not be our concern.

We should be MUCH more concerned with all the FREAKIN' penalties we actually deserved.

Did we watch the same game?  These refs didn't even know where to spot the ball!  The Bulls may have made a lot of bad penalties, but lets not allow the refs make it worse.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
