Round 3 should still be day 1.  Why didn't they leave it and shorten the first round to 10 minutes?

Smith went to a team he could end up starting for.

They did shorten the first round to 10 minutes.  However, they also are starting the draft later in the day now, for television purposes.

Funny that a ucIFer is automatically bemoaning that their RB should be a first day pick, when it really doesn't matter...

That's just a personal thing.  I'm a bit of a NFL traditionalist.  Didn't matter where Smith went.

I have said the same thing.. He had a shot at late 1st but 3rd was more likely.. Just a weird year for draft with RBS.  as the 1st pick of 3rd round I still think he was smart coming out.

Kevin Smith had no shot in hell of being a late 1st round pick... ever.

That being said, Lions got a solid pick in him.  I believe 83 said that Smith was the 10th best back in the draft... well, he was the 8th RB taken.  He'll do good things in Detroit.  At least he's in a cold-weather city with a dome, so the weather will rarely be a factor with him.

I'm surprised Forte went ahead of Smith but Detroit could be a good situation w/ their offense changing to a more run/pass balance
