So much for wanting to be close to "home" in WV.  I'm sure they could have stayed if they wanted to.  Do you all think it was a money thing?

former USF assistants Rod Smith and Greg Frey have notified West Virginia athletic director Ed Pastilong they intend to follow former Mountaineers coach Rich Rodriguez to Michigan, the MetroNews of West Virginia reported Friday.

ROD SMITH - OC AT MICHIGAN?!?!?!?  :o

Did I say "WOW"?!?!?!  ;D

I guess in the one hand it will be cool that USF will have a close tie to Michigan...  but - again...  WOW!  lol

Smith will not be OC, that would be Calvin McGee (ex USF assistant).

I like our chances next year against them knowing that the offensive side is WVU strongest, IMO.

Considering they settled on a coach because of one emotional win, they could be in big trouble if things go south.

He has a lot of hiring to do.

Their defense was #4 ranked - they were pretty good on both sides of the ball.  I think they do lose quite a few guys on defense and on the offensive line, but after their performance and with some decent coaching I think they will reload fairly easy.  I kind of liked them with their old coaches because we had their number.  If they get some young innovative guys (Chip Kelly types) running the spread then we will be in for a battle.

glad they're not staying in conference.  Never a good thing when you have two guys who have spent a number of years recruiting in FL as your conference foes.

Good luck to MICH with RS up there;)

I don't think it was a money thing with Frey and he had no roots in West Virginia. He just wanted to broaden his coaching horizon, since he had always been at USF and was good friends with Calvin McGee. Smith just wanted to go back home to West Virginia. However, I guess he now prefers the idea of staying with Rodriguez and going with his his two old USF pals to Michigan. Careerwise, it's probably a good move for all of them.

Hey, congratulations to all of them.  What an awesome career move for both Frey and Smith.  I may never liked Smith as an OC, but he is a good guy and proud of him.  Nice little family tree that Leavitt has going.  Frey, Smith and Magee at the winningest program of all time.  Earl Lane in the championship game at LSU and Kravitz as the DC at Memphis.  Not too shabby.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
