USFan Posted March 22, 2007 Group: Member Topic Count: 226 Content Count: 3,574 Reputation: 2 Days Won: 0 Joined: 11/26/2005 Share Posted March 22, 2007 But guys... he's been in the tourney 7 times out of the last 9.How often do you see small schools make it to the tourney this often?Let's set the foundation now.  He is young and the time is right (for both parties).What big names do we want?  A big name would be someone that isn't working right now (I just don't see us getting someone that is working right now at a big program).  So if they didn't make it before, why give them a second chance and then jump ship?Get the young guy, let him build it, make this his baby (insert Leavitt here) and let him take-off.It can work... it worked at Duke when they hired that Coach K guy.  He was 33 when he was hired and no one heard of him before. The guy has done impressive things there. Something like 7 NCAA appearances. But it's Winthrop, in the Big South or some such conference. We'll just have to see if there is anything to this at all. I can see him getting the job and being stuck and saying to himself, "...what did I get myself into?".I just don't think a Doherty or Gillen would be overwhelmed by the state of our program, where a younger type coach might be. The route Woolard is going, I believe, is the correct one. Finding the best available mid-major coach. Yall are discounting his success because he was at Winthrop, but think about it. How does a school like Winthrop make the NCAA Tourney? Answer: by winning their conference. They HAVE to win their conference. There are no at-larges coming out of the Big South.
