Grothe, 20, was working behind the bar April 19 at the Bull Ring Sports Bar near USF's campus on Fowler Ave., when he served two Corona Extras to an 18-year-old who was working with officers from the state's Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco. Grothe's arrest is unlikely to result in any significant disciplinary action from coach Jim Leavitt, and legally should not amount to more than probation and community service. But it seems USF was unaware the most prominent athlete on campus was working at least occasionally in a job serving alcohol at a place that USF encourages its fans and boosters to congregate. "I had heard something happened, but I didn't know what. He’s not there anymore," Leavitt said Friday. Asked if he had known Grothe was working there, Leavitt said he did not, and when asked if anyone at USF knew, he said "(I'm) unsure. But somebody is supposed to." Several Bulls coaches host their radio shows at the Bull Ring, a restaurant and bar is part of USF's "Bull Country" network of area businesses, catering to USF fans and featuring Bulls decorations prominently. Grothe's employment there in itself is neither illegal nor in violation of NCAA bylaws. Anyone over the age of 18 in Florida can legally serve alcohol in a licensed establishment, and NCAA rules do not limit a job a scholarship athlete can hold, so long as he is paid appropriately for actual work. Grothe, who did not return messages Friday seeking comment, was USF's offensive MVP as a redshirt freshman last year after leading the Bulls to a 9-4 record and the program's first bowl victory. He engineered three come-from-behind victories in September and established himself a playmaker, passing for 2,576 yards and 15 touchdowns and rushing for 622 yards and nine scores. With Brian Brohm - and Pat White coming to Tampa -- if we beat those teams - I would be SHOCKED!!!! but who knows -- i never saw us beating WVA last year.

I am toning down my prediction... I say we lose to Auburn, West Virginia and Louisville and then we have some other stupid loss. 8-4... and back to the some low-level bowl. I think next year is the break out year for the bulls.

I find this update really lame. We are now taking numbers of people who aren't uninterested that we are not interested in. That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. So -- lets call up Roy Williams and see if he is interested in USF -- just so we can run a headline that says "Roy Williams isn't interested in USF." Retarded. Besides Montgomery, Southern Illinois’ Chris Lowery and Holy Cross’ Ralph Willard both said there were not interested in the USF job. I think expectations are starting to get a little high. A good first step would be to go to get ranked on a regular basis. i think we are expecting a lot out of a still very young program. auburn will be a very good bench mark. hopefully we can keep it close.

Brad, I agree with you 100%!. (Herm, Rueb spare me the kiss butt messages) I actually typed up a 3 zillion word rant about 2 weeks ago saying pretty much the same thing. The oppurtunity at USF is one that doesn't come around very often.  Yeah there might be better programs out there.  Yeah there might be schools with way bigger budgets. But just think of what kind of guy you would be if you could take pathetic ole "South Florida" to the NCAA tournament?  You would be an total rock star! What is ironic is that is exactly how CJL thinks.  They asked him why he wasn't interested in the Alabama job and he said "5 guys have won a national title at Alabama.  I don't want to be another guy who won a national title at some other school.  Imagine if I could win a national title at South Florida?  Now that would be special." The expectations are so low.  The bar is inches off the ground at the sun dome.  If a guy could take us to the Big East Tourny and the NIT on a regular basis he would be un-fireable. I look at a job like Iowa and think why? All  you have to do at USF is win 20 games and the job is yours for the rest of your life. Take the job at Ark and 2 first round losses in the NCAA tourny gets you fired.  Take the job at USF and two first round NCAA losses gets you a 500K dollar raise. Its a no brainer in my eyes. Anyone who is scared off lacks confidence in their ability.  A man who knows he is a good coach, thinks he can win anywhere. Its like in golf.  No matter how big or small you make the cup, good putters will always make more putts.  Its not the size of the cup that makes them good putters - its the stroke and confidence.

probably the best candidate thus far. it would be ironic if he was hired. would much rather have this guy then any other persont hat has been mentioned. This guy is 2 steps about Marshall. He can recruit big time players and has proven he can take his team to the NCAA tourny. He just took his team to the SEC champ for god sakes. Is there anything to talk about or then "How much do we need to pay you?" hire him.

Kentucky is going to have one of its best teams this year.. you are crazy. They went to a bowl game and won a boat load of games late in the year.
