But guys... he's been in the tourney 7 times out of the last 9.

How often do you see small schools make it to the tourney this often?

Let's set the foundation now.  He is young and the time is right (for both parties).

What big names do we want?  A big name would be someone that isn't working right now (I just don't see us getting someone that is working right now at a big program).  So if they didn't make it before, why give them a second chance and then jump ship?

Get the young guy, let him build it, make this his baby (insert Leavitt here) and let him take-off.

It can work... it worked at Duke when they hired that Coach K guy.  He was 33 when he was hired and no one heard of him before.

Winthrop has been hot for a number of years.  The guy has done impressive things there.  Something like 7 NCAA appearances.  But it's Winthrop, in the Big South or some such conference.

We'll just have to see if there is anything to this at all.

I dont know, I like bullievers idea of an experienced major conference coach.

Though I will say this guy seems he may be able to grow on us.

He wavered last year with College of Charleston.  I can see him getting the job and being stuck and saying to himself, "...what did I get myself into?".

I just don't think a Doherty or Gillen would be overwhelmed by the state of our program, where a younger type coach might be.

Pelphrey seemed like a lock a day or two ago, I wouldn't get too excited about this just yet.

Yeah -- i actually believe Brad is on to something here.

Not really sold on this guy.

Gillien has been the only candidate thus far that I have liked.

I guess we are in a bit of  a pickle  -- not a good enough program to get a top guy -- but we need some charisma or star power to revive the program.

I still like Gillien thus far -- although it doesn't look like he is going to get the job.

I'm sure Ari will make fun of this like he's been doing, but I do trust Woolard.

Well, whether or not I think Marshall is a good hire doesn't really matter.  I too believe that we have the right guy making the decision and whichever way it goes I will not prejudge but will support the AD and his choice.

nothing like blind faith

Yall are forgetting something very important: USF doesnt have the money to spend on a "big name". The route Woolard is going, I believe, is the correct one. Finding the best available mid-major coach.

Yall are discounting his success because he was at Winthrop, but think about it. How does a school like Winthrop make the NCAA Tourney? Answer: by winning their conference. They HAVE to win their conference. There are no at-larges coming out of the Big South. Based on that, 7 out of 9 years in the NCAA Tourney is impressive to me....

some people are saying that we shouldnt hire him because he comes from the big south conference which is a terrible conference. are these the same people saying we should hire john pelphrey from the sun belt??
