USF and Stetson Battle in Front of a National Audience This Thursday

TAMPA, Fla. (October 10, 2006) - The USF Soccer Stadium will be the site for this week’s NSCAA College Match of the Week on Fox Soccer Channel as the University of South Florida men’s soccer team (6-4-3, 3-2-3 BIG EAST) hosts the Stetson Hatters (3-8-2, 2-0-2 A-Sun) on Thursday, Oct. 12. Game time is 8 p.m.

The mid-week, non-conference battle is expected to take place in front a raucous, record-breaking crowd on the USF campus as the two teams meet for the 27th time. The first 100 fans at the USF Soccer Stadium will receive a free USF t-shirt.

The Bulls come into Thursday’s game riding a two-game unbeaten streak, following a win over FAU (10/4) and a tie at Cincinnati (10/7). Looking for their second-straight home victory, the Bulls welcome Stetson to the USF Soccer Stadium for the 18th time. USF holds a 14-2-1 mark all-time versus the Hatters at home, including last year’s 3-0 win during the first round of the NCAA Tournament (11/18).

The Bulls are led offensively by sophomore Jordan Seabrook, who has tallied four goals and two assists for 10 points on the season. The Indianapolis, Ind., native has recorded two goals versus the Hatters during his USF career. Junior Rodrigo Hidalgo, who was named to the U.S. Under-20 Men's National Team roster (10/8-10/12), enters the national broadcast with four goals and one assist for nine points. The Hermann Trophy candidate is still looking for his breakout game this season and is hoping that Thursday’s contest will be just that. Senior Sammy Castellanos leads all USF players with four assists this season. The native of Philadelphia, Pa., will be making his 64th-collegiate appearance on Thursday.

Goalkeeper Dane Brenner is coming off a solid week in which the High Point, N.C., native was recognized by the BIG EAST Conference (Honor Roll) for registering back-to-back shutouts last week. Brenner, who had an eight-save outing (tied career-best) versus the No. 15-ranked Cincinnati Bearcats, enters Thursday’s contest ranked 23rd in goals against average (0.73) and 30th in save percentage (82.5%) in the entire nation. His six shutouts on the season ties the previous career-best at USFfor shutouts in a single year.

Defender Kareem Smith, who will be making his 70th-career start on Thursday, anchors a Bulls’ defense which ranks 20th in the nation in goals against average and is listed as the 21st-best team in save percentage (83.1%).

Entering their 14th game of the season, the Stetson Hatters come into Thursday’s game unbeaten in their last four outings (2-0-2). The Hatters have not won at the USF Soccer Stadium in 19 years (Sept. 20, 1988) and are winless against the Bulls in the last six meetings.

Stetson is led offensively by Tanner Wolfe, who enters this week’s game with five goals and two assists for 12 points. The top assist man for the Hatters is Ben Dyon, who has notched five helpersthis season. In net, Stetson has used three different goalkeepers, with Alessand Barcherini making the most starts for the Hatters. Barcherini owns a 2-4-2 record with a 1.98 GAA and one shutout in eight appearances for Stetson.

USF looks to improve on its 21-4-1 record all-time over the Hatters and will be looking for the support of the fans to help guide the Bulls to victory.

USF will be looking to fill the stadium as the men’s soccer team takes part in the program’s first-ever nationally televised contest at home.

I just received this email...

"On Thursday October 12th at 8:00 pm the USF Men’s Soccer Team is trying to break the current soccer game attendance record for their game versus Stetson University.  The current attendance record is roughly 1,600 people.  We would like to destroy this record and are hoping for over 3,000 people.  Please help us break this record and show that USF has one of the best college soccer atmospheres in the country.  This game will also be broadcasted LIVE on NATIONAL TELEVISION by the FOX SOCCER CHANNEL."

Let's see if we can get 3000.
