FSU didn't get to be a known team because they beat big teams, they became a known program for consistently having strong records year after year.

Even as a non-Seminole...I could tell you that you couldn't be more wrong.

FSU became famous under Bowden because OF their big wins AWAY from Tallahassee.

Bowden made FSU the first (and maybe only) Road Warrior Team.

FSU traveled to LSU SEVEN TIMES under Bowden...while LSU played in Tally only once (Bowden is 7-1 vs the Tigers, losing only once in Death Valley)

FSU traveled to Lincoln, NE FOUR straight years in a row (from 1980-1983) and FSU won their first ever game there (Nebraska was ranked #3 in the Nation)...on the way to the Orange Bowl. FSU ended up splitting those 4 games in Lincoln. (Believe FSU is the only team not to have a losing record in Lincoln that played at least 4 games there). Also, FSU is 4-0 vs Nebraska in Bowl Games.

Bowden & FSU traveled up to Ohio State TWICE (won both). OSU has never played in Tally. FSU won both games played in Columbus, OH. (Bowden is 3-0 overall vs Ohio St...FSU won a Sugar Bowl vs OSU)

Bowden & FSU  traveled up to Michigan TWICE (split) and Michigan has never played in Tally.

Bowden & FSU use to have to play Florida, Auburn, & Miami every year.

Bowden & FSU travled twice to Tempe, AZ to play Arizona St. ASU only agreed to play FSU in Tampa. FSU won all 3 games.

Bowden is 2-0 vs Southern Cal.

FSU travled up to Syracuse 3 times and the Orangemen went to Tally twice. Bowden is 5-0 vs Cuse.

Bowden & FSU had a 14 year straight Bowl unbeaten streak (FSU went 13-0-1).

Yeah...FSU won a ton of games...but Bowden put FSU on the map by securing National "TV" games (winning many of them)...back when getting games on TV was hard...and limited.

That's how Bowden built FSU...by putting his team on the ROAD, WINNING, and winning tons of Bowl Games. (FYI...believe Doak Campbell back in the late 70's when Bowden came to FSU only seated around 48,000-50,000 fans. FSU couldn't afford large payouts back then).

As much as I hate to admit it, the Kanigit's right about how FSU got put on the map. They were the Ultimate Road Warriors ..... but that was the onlyway they could do it back then without a conference affiliation.

Currently we have these options ...

1. Play big teams AWAY

2. Play smaller teams at HOME

3. Continue to get more Home & Away series

A. Too many 4get that we played PSU & UM away last year.

B. We have UCF, Kansas & UNC - 2 outta 3 BCS, remember - the 12th game was just added by NCAA.

C. We have Auburn(Away) & UNC(Home) in 2007(Both BCS) with 3 more games to be filled.

:P

option one is the way to go

I DONT SEE ANY PATSIES HERE

One thing that some people can seem to understand: 30 years ago, when SO MANY teams were independent, scheduling was A LOT easier.

FSU's I-AA opponents since 1978 (the year football was divided into I-A and I-AA):

Oct 9, 1982 Southern Illinois** H 59- 8

Nov 17, 1984 Tennessee-Chatta. H 37- 0

Oct 18, 1985 Wichita State H 59- 3

Oct 19, 1991 Mid Tenn State** H 39-10

Sep 23, 1995 Central Florida H 46-14

Sep 10, 2005 The Citadel H 62-10

UF's I-AA opponents since 1978:

Sep 12, 1981 Furman H 35-7

Oct 16, 1982 West Texas State** H 77-14  (No longer exists, part of Texas A&M)

Sep 17, 1983 Indiana State H 17-13

Aug 30, 1986 Georgia Southern H 38-14

Oct 10, 1987 Cal State Fullerton H 65-0 (No longer plays football)

Sep 3, 1988 Montana State H 69-0

Sep 22, 1990 Furman H 27-3

Sep 7, 1996 Georgia Southern H 62-14

Sep 5, 1998 The Citadel H 49-10

Sep 13, 2003 Florida A&M H 63-3

Nov 18, 2006 Western Carolina H

Miami's I-AA opponents since 1978:

Oct 21, 1978 Utah State H 17-16

FSU became famous under Bowden because OF their big wins AWAY from Tallahassee.

Became famous would be anything before 1987 (the start of Bobby Bowden's streak of Top 5 AP finishes).

Bowden made FSU the first (and maybe only) Road Warrior Team.

I am not sure that is entirely accurate -- I think it is a combination of consistent winning seasons and winning a few big games at home or on the road.

FSU traveled to LSU SEVEN TIMES under Bowden...while LSU played in Tally only once (Bowden is 7-1 vs the Tigers, losing only once in Death Valley)

Four times from 1979 - 1983.  Also, this is not as impresive as it would seem - LSU's record from 1979 - 1983 was 29-26-2.

Incorrect. They only went to Nebraska in 1980 and 1981, winning 18-14 in '80.  They did not play Nebraska in 1982 or 1983.

Bowden & FSU traveled up to Ohio State TWICE (won both). OSU has never played in Tally. FSU won both games played in Columbus, OH. (Bowden is 3-0 overall vs Ohio St...FSU won a Sugar Bowl vs OSU)

Correct. In 1981 and 1982, FSU beat OSU in Columbus.  OSU finished 9-3 both seasons.  The bowl game was after the 1997 season, so this is discounted.

Bowden & FSU  traveled up to Michigan TWICE (split) and Michigan has never played in Tally.

The first was 1986 - FSU lost when Michigan went 11-2.

Bowden & FSU use to have to play Florida, Auburn, & Miami every year.

Not really.  Yes, FSU has their annual series with Miami and Florida, but Bowden only played Auburn five times before 1987 (1976-1977, 1983-1985) going 3-2 (1-2 on the road, 2-0 at home).

Bowden & FSU travled twice to Tempe, AZ to play Arizona St. ASU only agreed to play FSU in Tampa. FSU won all 3 games.

Not quite true.  Arizona State's website calls the 1979 game as a home game for FSU - it was a neutral site game. In 1983 & 1984, FSU beat ASU at home.  ASU was 12-21-1 in those three seasons.

Bowden is 2-0 vs Southern Cal.

Not before becoming famous in 1987.

FSU travled up to Syracuse 3 times and the Orangemen went to Tally twice. Bowden is 5-0 vs Cuse.

Again, only 1 time before 1987 - and Syracuse went 3-8 that year.

Bowden & FSU had a 14 year straight Bowl unbeaten streak (FSU went 13-0-1).

He lost his first two bowl games and was 3-2-1 in bowl games before 1987.

Yeah...FSU won a ton of games...but Bowden put FSU on the map by securing National "TV" games (winning many of them)...back when getting games on TV was hard...and limited.

Well, that is not really true either.  Prior to 1984, the NCAA had rules that said no team could have more than 1 game on television every year.  They also had rules providing for 1 national game each week, but local stations could broadcast games of local interest instead.  These rules were designed to increase attendance at football games.  Also, the 1982-1985 contract with the NCAA was with CBS, ABC, and ESPN - no one else could televise NCAA football games.

Many prominent colleges formed the College Football Association ostensibly to pool together to sell rights to televise games.  In 1984, Oklahoma and Georgia - among others - sued the NCAA to get the rights to televise games.  The Supreme Court ruled the NCAA violated antitrust laws.

This enabled the CFA and the Big 10-Pac 10 to sell rights to cable television markets, and other networks.  They went from 1 per week to 8 per week.  So starting in 1984, it was not so hard to get on television.

That's how Bowden built FSU...by putting his team on the ROAD, WINNING, and winning tons of Bowl Games. (FYI...believe Doak Campbell back in the late 70's when Bowden came to FSU only seated around 48,000-50,000 fans. FSU couldn't afford large payouts back then)

You're right. When Bowden started, the stadium could hold 40,500.  It was expanded in 1978 to 47,000+, in 1982 to 55,000+, and in 1985 to 60,000+.  So, as FSU became more prominent, they could put more butts in the seats.

In the end, I don't think FSU's success can really be attributed to winning on the road against big name opponents.

(You should use the FSU official site for your statistics.)
