Assistant Coach Julius Allen Decides To Leave Program

TAMPA, Fla. – University of South Florida assistant men’s basketball coach Julius Allen has decided to leave the program in order to move closer to his native New York area, head coach Robert McCullum announced.

“I truly enjoyed my time at USF,†Allen said.  Ã¢â‚¬Å“I worked with some great people and I really believe the program is going to develop into one of the best in the BIG EAST.â€Â

Allen spent each of the last two seasons with the Bulls after working for one year (2003-04) at Howard University in Washington, D.C.  A native of the Bronx, N.Y., Allen played one season at Oregon State (1978-79) and Southern Nazarene (1980-81) after a stop at the junior college ranks.

“We certainly respect Julius’ desire to move closer to home,†McCullum said.  Ã¢â‚¬Å“We appreciate his contributions to the program and wish him the best of luck in the future.â€Â

Allen is a pretty decent recruiter. I think he was instrumental in getting Chris Howard to sign with USF last year. This loss is going to sting on the recruiting front. I hope we can replace him with someone that can comb through the North East for some top-notch b-ball talent.

Move closer to home??  He's been gone for a year.  If he thought Mac's program were worth a darn I'm sure he could have "toughed it out" in sunny Tampa.   ::)  He knew Tampa was about 1600 miles away from NYC when he took the position.  How many assistants have quit no Mac now?

Mac's former assistant from WMU also quit on him when Mac had recently been hired as USF's coach and the assistant tagged along with him. Interesting point, Beastie.

RMC is not a, "lame duck" coach.  If he get's the job done, he will be retained.

I don't think that's true. According to one of the papers this morning, the only recruit Allen got on campus was Sills ....

Maybe he'll replace him with someone that can actually get good, qualified players in here ........ hopefully.
