TAMPA - Freshman kicker Kyle Bronson, who just completed the second-best season in University of South Florida history, is likely leaving USF because he hasn't been awarded a scholarship.

A Wharton High graduate, Bronson replaced freshman Mike Benzer, USF's only scholarship place-kicker, in USF's second game against Florida A&M after Benzer missed his first three field goals. Bronson started USF's final 10 games and finished 11 of 16 on field goals and 29 of 30 on extra points.

Bronson's 68.7 field goal percentage was second only to Santiago Gramatica's school record 76.2 percent (16 of 21) in 2002.

Bronson is undecided where he will attend college next season, his mother Tammy Bronson said.

"Kyle is a Bull and he loves USF," Tammy Bronson said. "He's worked very hard and if there was a scholarship available, he would remain at USF."

Bronson informed USF coach Jim Leavitt of his decision last week.

Benzer and incoming freshman kicker/punter Delbert Alvarado of Robinson will be USF's only two scholarship kickers.

I hope Leavitt offers Bronson a scholarship because they kicker deserved it this season. He made some key FGs for us this season, and he was only a Freshman. I hate to see USF lose a good kicker like Kyle just because we refused to offer a scholarship.

That is rediculous. He has a great future here. With Baker leaving that leaves at least one special teams scholarship available. SIGN HIM!

He has earned it.

He will win a game for us next year. If we have to start over we will lose a game or 2 to kicking.

If we learned anything from this year's postseason--particularly BCS--it's that a kicker worth his salt is a necessity. Hold on to him!

But it has to be a more a matter of do we need the depth at kicking or do we need the depth at the line, running backs, etc.

Tough decision, but I understand it.

I am not sure if it is true, but I heard Janikowski was the first kicker to receive a scholarship at FSU.  He may not have gotten one if it wasn't for all of those pesky "wide right" games.
