STORY

 

Jose Fernandez Named 2024 USA Basketball Women’s U18 National Team Assistant Coach

 

Colorado Springs, Colorado., Feb. 29, 2024 – USA Basketball has selected South Florida women’s basketball Head Coach Jose Fernandez as an assistant coach for the 2024 USA Basketball Women’s U18 National Team, announced by the national governing body on Thursday.

 

Coach Fernandez will make his assistant coaching debut for USA Basketball after serving as a court coach in 2018 for the U18 National Team Trials.

 

“I’m humbled and grateful for the opportunity to work alongside two unbelievable coaches and to be a part of a journey with incredible student-athletes in the pursuit of a gold medal this summer,” said Coach Fernandez.

 

The 2024 USA Women’s U18 National Team will be led by Teri Moren (Indiana University), with Niele Ivey (University of Notre Dame) and Fernandez serving as assistant coaches.

 

The 2024 FIBA U18 Women’s AmeriCup will take place on June 17-23 (location TBA by FIBA Americas). Team USA will look to capture its 11th-straight gold medal and 12th overall since the tournament’s inception in 1988.

 

JOSE FERNANDEZ CAREER ACCOMPLISHMENTS

2023-24 WBCA Vice President / President-Elect.
Selected as an assistant coach on the 2024 USA Basketball Women’s U18 National Team.
Recorded his 450th career victory during the 2023-24 season.
Two-time American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year (2018, 2021).
Nine NCAA Tournament appearances (eight in the past 11 seasons).
Twelve straight 19-win seasons and 11 20-win seasons.
Has 19 wins against top 25-ranked teams, including No. 6 Mississippi State in 2020, No. 7 Stanford (2021 defending national champion), and No. 22 Texas and No. 17 Arkansas in 2022.
USF’s 2022-23 squad captured the AAC regular-season title.
USF’s 2020-21 team won the AAC regular-season title and the conference tournament championship.
Inducted into the Sports Club of Tampa Bay’s Hall of Fame on June 8, 2022.
South Florida won the 2008-09 WNIT Championship, defeating the Kansas Jayhawks.
Has 18 former Bulls playing professionally worldwide.
Recruited and coached players from 22 different countries.
Recruited and coached over 36 all-conference players, two Associated Press honorable mention All-Americans, four members of the USF Athletics Hall of Fame, two AAC Players of the Year, three AAC Freshmen of the Year, and seven WNBA draft picks.

Will be interesting to see if this gig helps more than the USA softball coach position has.

Could be wrong but wasn't CKE dealing with college and above athletes? Assuming U18's are mostly high schoolers and should give more of a chance for the gig to help CJF ...... if assumptions are correct.

Believe your assumptions are correct. One would think that when recruiting, the coach of the USA team would have some weight in recruiting future college softball players.

One would think that... if the coach actually put his or her energy into personally recruiting instead of delegating the job out to assistants.
