… we go P5?  Feeling thankful today for his arrival here and wondering if we did what it would take to keep him here - and this might be a critical “ opportunity”.

Yes sir! At least 1mil per year and 25k for a bowl game. I'm hoping for a win on Saturday that would be an incredible turnaround for a first year coach. Well technically it already has been.

Yes, pretty sure his base salary increases by over a $1 million annually if we move to a P5 conference.

More importantly does his buyout go up if we move to a P5 conference?

To put a finer point on it I believe he gets an auto renegotiation with a floor set on a mil raise.

But I was thinking instead of moving up his buyout why wouldn’t we pay him five times 3-5×1,000,000?  It’s pretty clear we ain’t getting there without a winning coach.

We probably need to do both. Pay him more and up the buyout, if we reset his contract and move up. Big programs will throw crazy money at him and as much as we want to keep a good coach we need to be able to replace them if need be.

He obviously would immediately agree to one, but not the other. So perhaps the time to negotiate that has passed, but it would certainly be nice to say we’re going to pay you X million and your buyer will also be asked million x whatever.  I know the dingdongs will flood in here and say  “if he wins and leaves that’s great” but I think we really need to have a more strategic plan than that.  If no one learned anything in the last three or four hires, then we’re doomed to repeat that too.
