if you believe the stories that he was let go on trumped up charges because the athletic department thought he had plateaued and wanted more out of the program, that says they thought it was indeed important.

Fair. The athletic department here showed its hand the day it fired Leavitt that athletics is not important, and continues annually to support that claim further.  At least basketball is competit

I more saw it as they would rather save face than have to answer difficult questions about the coach. It was a low effort, non-thought out move in my opinion.

I think it could have been handled better by all sides ... with the major culprit being the BM.
