Ricky the Bull Posted November 6, 2005 Group: Member Topic Count: 1,037 Content Count: 7,521 Reputation: 1,124 Days Won: 10 Joined: 12/25/2001 Share Posted November 6, 2005 TAMPA, Fla. (Saturday, Nov. 5) – Trailing 1-0 at the intermission of its BIG EAST Championship Quarterfinal matchup versus West Virginia (12-7-2, 6-4-1 BIG EAST), the USF men's soccer team (12-5-0, 9-2-0 BIG EAST) was able to ignite its potent offensive attack following halftime and rally for a 4-1 victory. Sophomore Rodrigo Hidalgo (6g, 12 a, 24 pts.) sparked the comeback with two goals, including the equalizer, and added an assist for a five-point night. After Hidalgo knotted the match at 1-1, his corner kick just over two minutes later found the head of freshman Yohance Marshall (2g, 1a, 5 pts.) and the result was a 2-1 USF advantage. Simon Schoendorf (6g, 2a, 14 pts.) also netted a goal in the contest. Freshman Jordan Seabrook, who set up Hidalgo’s equalizer, tallied a career-high three assists versus West Virginia. Goalkeeper Dane Brenner (12-5-0, 1.33 GAA) notched three saves en route to his 12th victory of the season. “The team put together some of the best soccer I’ve seen,†said head coach George Kiefer. “As far as attacking, getting forward, sending our outside backs, throwing a lot at West Virginia. West Virginia is very well coached. They play a little more direct. Once they get into your half of the field, they move the ball well. The definitely disrupted us in the first half.†On the night, USF held a slight advantage in shots (16-15). However, the Bulls defense allowed only five of those shots on net. USF registered 11 shots on goal in the contest. Hidalgo led all USF players with five shots versus the Mountaineers. West Virginia took an early lead with a goal by Andy Wright in the 21st minute. Off of a freekick by Dan Stratford, Wright headed the ball past Brenner. The goal was the fifth of the season for Wright, while Stratford was credited with his fourth assist of the season. USF tied the game with Hidalgo’s first goal of the night in the 65th minute. Closing in on the end line, the sophomore angled a shot past goalkeeper Nick Noble to tie the game at 1-all. Seabrook, who found Hidalgo on the left side of the West Virginia 18-yard box was credited with his sixth assist of the season on the score. The Bulls added a goal two minutes later with Marshall’s game-winner in the 67th minute. Off of a corner kick by Hidalgo, Marshall headed the ball – far post – for his second goal of the season. Hidalgo notched his team-best 12th assist of 2005 on the play. Schoendorf extended USf’s lead to 3-1 with a goal in the 69th minute. The Karlsruhe, Germany, native scored on a header off of a cross by Seabrook. Both Seabrook and defender Kareem Smith were credited with assists on the play. Hidalgo scored his second goal of the night in the 73rd minute to give USF a 4-1 lead. For the third time of the evening, Seabrook registered an assist after crossing the ball in front of West Virginia’s goal mouth, finding Hidalgo, who buried the ball into the back of the net. Seabrook and midfielder Brian Gil were awarded assists on the score. With the win, USF extended its current home-winning streak to nine games. The 12 wins are the most by a USF team since the 2001 season (the last time USF advanced to the NCAA Tournament). USF will now face Providence in the tournament semifinals, to be played Friday afternoon (Nov. 11) at 3:30 p.m. The final two rounds of the championship will be hosted by Connecticut. The Bulls and Friars did not meet during the regular season.
