First, let me say that if it were put to a vote, I would vote to keep the name.

However, if the university were to hypothetically look to change the name, there are a number of options available.

Remember that public schools don't need to be U of or State U... they can have other names...

Here is my list -- in no particular order:

1 - University of Tampa Bay  or  Tampa Bay State University

2 - Sunshine State University  or  University of the Sunshine State

3 - Tampa State University (University of Tampa is taken)

4 - Tampa University (might be confusing, but technically available)

Getting away from location-based names, we could name the school after a person:

5 - [LeRoy] Collins State University - governor of Florida when the school was established

6 - [Dwight D] Eisenhower State University - president of the United States when the school was established

7 - [Rosa] Parks University - to honor a pivotal figure in the battle for racial equality  (the same would apply to Martin Luther King University)

8 - [James Ellis] Bush University - to honor the first Republican governor ever re-elected by the people of Florida ;-)

Personally, the University of South Florida sounds the best... and because USF can also be the University of Sun and Fun!!!

IMO Tampa State University (TSU) is the only thing close to being acceptable.  But USF is south of the state's geographical and population equator (for lack of better words).  So technically, USF is in south(ern) Florida.

Most of the schools named City State Univerisity have dropped the "State" from their names recently.  Memphis and Troy are two I can think of right now

I like South Florida too because it's on my diploma.  However, some names:

Tampa Bay University - Tampa Bay Bulls

(Henry B.) Plant University - Plant Bulls

(Ponce) DeLeon Univeristy

(Panfilo) de Narvaez University - He made the first recorded exploration of Tampa Bay.

(Hernando) De Soto University

Osceola University

(Theodore) Roosevelt University

There is a story behind our name...and I like it that way...now, everyone back to arguing about tasers and on campus stadiums.

An example, we dont call it the University of Alabama at Birmingham, we call it UAB, eventually (if not now) we will just be known as USF, even though our official name will be the University of South Florida
