TAMPA, OCT. 10, 2014 – USF men’s basketball is a week into practice and new head coach Orlando Antigua can tell the Bulls have made the most of their offseason.

Anthony Collins, Chris Perry, Corey Allen Jr. and the rest of the USF squad zipped up and down the court at a fast and furious pace Friday afternoon at the Muma Center and Antigua said it’s all a testament to their training.

“We’re really excited about the kind of shape that they’re in,†Antigua said. “They’ve bought into everything we’ve asked of them over the summer and we’re starting to see the results of the hard work they’ve put in at the weight room and on the court.â€

Antigua came to USF from Kentucky, where he assisted John Calipari for five seasons, and he’s implemented the same type of up-tempo offense the Wildcats have used to achieve great success.

“Early in the season some of the things we’re doing are really new to them. It’s like them learning a new language for one with the speed we want to play and the decision making that goes into that,†Antigua said.

Throughout his examination of the Bulls, Antigua said he’s been impressed with the endurance USF’s big men have already build up with less than a month to go before the preseason exhibition test at home against IU Pennsylvania on Nov. 8.

“They don’t have a sub, they don’t get out of the practice, and they’re going for two and a half hours at times constantly. I’m happy with that,†Antigua said.

Antigua also has been pleased with the chemistry forming in the backcourt.

“I’m really happy with the guard play with Corey in terms of using his speed and being able to utilize the spread court,†Antigua said. “AC is starting to get a good feel for it as well. We’ll continue to build and see how that goes.â€

Collins said he’s been a full go at practice after missing 24 games with a left knee injury last season. Collins will be a junior this season after his NCAA medical hardship waiver was approved in September.

“It feels good to be back and I’m just excited about the year,†he said.

Aside from standout individual efforts, Antigua has been pleased with the strong bond the team has formed early in the preseason.

“I think that’s something that you hope happens and you want to happen,†Antigua said. “They see the investment each of them have made to themselves and to each other. That tends to lend you a certain pride and a certain swagger knowing how hard you’ve work and that you’ve invested time in your craft.â€

The Bulls begin their season with an exhibition against IU-Pennsylvania on Nov. 8 before opening the regular season against Flagler College on Nov. 14 at the Sun Dome. Purchase tickets for the exciting season ahead HERE.

Basketball went from grind-it-out to uptempo just as football went to 4-yards-and-dust. Oh well, can't have everything.

Really looking forward to the hardcourt season this year.

It'll be a good season to get some key players some experience under their belts. We have a very young team that's likely to take its lumps next season.
