TAMPA – USF ace Sara Nevins and star shortstop Kourtney Salvarola have been selected to play for the 2013 USA Softball Women’s National Team this summer.

Nevins and Salvarola made the 18-player roster after competing at a three-day selection camp at the ASA Hall of Fame complex and they’ll look to help Team USA chase after a title at the World Cup of Softball July 11-14 in Oklahoma City.

Following the World Cup, Team USA will take part in the Canadian Open Fast Pitch International Championship in Surrey, B.C., July 16-22 followed by the ISF Women’s World Championship/Pan American Games qualifier in San Juan, Puerto Rico Aug. 5-18.

“We’ve got four players right now that are representing the country; two with the junior team (Erica Nunn, Lee Ann Spivey) and Nevins and Salvarola, who did a great job at the tryouts,” USF and Team USA head coach Ken Eriksen said. “The selection committee thought they needed to be involved with the team this year.”

Nevins finished sixth in the nation with a 1.20 ERA while leading the Bulls with 26 wins and 275 strikeouts in 215 2/3 innings as a junior. The left-hander was named Big East Pitcher of the Year, an NFCA Division I All-American and was one of 25 finalists for the USA Softball Pitcher of the Year award.

“It’s very exciting to play for your country and also represent USF,” Nevins said.

Salvarola was a unanimous All-Big East First Team selection  and led USF in a ton of offensive categories including batting average (.331), runs (39), hits (56), homers (13) RBIs (43), slugging percentage (.633) and on-base percentage (.447) as a junior.

With the team having a limited amount of position players, Eriksen said Salvarola could be playing shortstop, second base, third base or even in the outfield like she did when she was on the junior national team.

“She lends herself to a lot of valuable aspects of this team and everybody that wears USA is going to play,” Eriksen said. “It’s great that she has the opportunity to learn from a lot of great players around her.”

Kourtney really bumped up her power numbers this year.  Always was a slick fielder and good hitter.  But the # of homeruns was impressive.  Congrats to all 4 of the women.
