This is a matchup nightmare for UF. Everything to lose but nothing to win.Curious to see if FGCU can demoralize them like they did to GU and SDSU. Gonna be really interesting. ****, I'm glad SDSU bolted from the NBE now, they looked like whipped dogs.

Enfield's only making $157,500 this year.

Wonder how much he'll be making NEXT year? (and WHERE?)

Big Man on Campus: What will it take to keep Andy Enfield at FGCU after NCAA victory?

It’s a March tradition as common as cutting down the nets: a small-conference men’s basketball coach directs his spunky squad to a conference championship, pulls a stunner in the NCAA Tournament, then bolts for a major program.

John Groce did it last year, parlaying Ohio’s Sweet Sixteen appearance into the Illinois job. Steve Donahue did it in 2010, bailing for Boston College after two tournament wins at Cornell.

The question now on Southwest Florida’s mind: Will Andy Enfield, coach of Florida Gulf Coast University, do it in 2013?

Few coaches figure to be as in-demand this offseason as Enfield, 43, whose Eagles on Friday became just the seventh No. 15 seed team in NCAA Tournament history to upset a No. 2 seed.

Enfield is 43 years old, youthful enough to appeal to prospective college players. He’s highly educated, with an MBA sure to impress wealthy donors. And most importantly, he has an impressive basketball résumé, with stints as an NBA and college assistant, in addition to his FGCU success.

For now, Enfield has demurred when asked about his future, saying his focus has been solely on tournament preparation.

“That’s just part of the business,†Enfield said of the speculation after his team’s Atlantic Sun Conference victory. “I haven’t thought about that. I’m so focused on what we’re doing here. I love FGCU.â€

But FGCU administrators are acutely aware of Enfield’s employment potential, and they’re planning for negotiations sure to come.

“We value coach Enfield and will do whatever is reasonably possible to invest in our basketball program,†FGCU President Wilson Bradshaw said. “From where I sit, that means we envision Andy being with us for a while. He’s a rising star, and we are fortunate and pleased to have him here.â€

This much is certain: Enfield’s due a pay raise. He’s on the second year of a five-year contract with an annual salary of $157,500. At the time of his hiring, the salary was generally in line with his small-conference peers. Now, it’s less than the market is likely to bear.

Kavanagh wouldn’t specifically address the expected interest or any potential negotiations with Enfield. Nonetheless, he heads into the offseason looking to keep Enfield in Estero, hopeful his presence leads the Eagles back into the Big Dance.

“Any time you have quality personnel, whether it’s a coach or an administrator, you always appreciate the fact that they may have additional opportunities,†Kavanagh said. “Our goal and responsibility is to try to create the best environment we can create to try to keep people as long as we can.â€

A bevy of factors will figure into Enfield’s decision. How attractive are any offers that come his way? How important is coaching at a major-conference program to him? What does he foresee as FGCU’s potential? What does his family — wife Amanda and three young children — value?

If history offers any clues, it’s not a given Enfield jumps ship this offseason. Following upsets of No. 2 seeds last year, the coaches at No. 15-seeded Lehigh and Norfolk State stayed at their respective schools.

At Norfolk State, coach Anthony Evans had a few interviews before deciding to remain at the small Virginia school, receiving a $50,000 raise for an annual $175,000 salary, Athletic Director Marty Miller said.

“The biggest thing I can say is for the (athletic director) to sit down with the coach to try to get a feel of where the coach really wants to go with his or her career, and see if the fit is right,†Miller said. “I think the other thing coaches have to think about is whether after one year of success, you’re ready for the next level.â€

Indeed, recent history shows few success stories for coaches jumping from smaller schools. In the past five years, 14 coaches who made the NCAA Tournament from small and lower mid-major conference schools have left for another program in the offseason, according to a Daily News review. Of those 14, only two — Groce, the current Illinois coach, and Anthony Grant, the former Virginia Commonwealth coach now at Alabama — have made it back to the tournament. Most have languished at programs that lack rich basketball tradition, such as Rutgers, Texas Christian and Washington State.

Still, Enfield’s basketball pedigree and business acumen make him a unique case. None of those 14 coaches has spent time on an NBA team’s staff, as Enfield has on the Milwaulkee Bucks and Boston Celtics, and certainly none co-founded a multimillion-dollar business, as Enfield did in 2000 with health care software company TractManager.

It all means Kavanagh, Bradshaw and Enfield face pressing questions that could define not only the future of FGCU men’s basketball, but the school’s entire athletic department.

“We want anybody on our staff to feel like they’re at the right place,†Kavanagh said. “We hope that’s FGCU, and if it’s not, we appreciate it.â€

Enfield made millions before he went into coaching.  Oh, and he has a Vicotoria's Secret model as a wife.  How's that for a career by your early 40s?  You think he cares if he moves up or not?  It will be interesting to see what happens.

Wait, I know a team that might have an opening if they don't have a frontcourt next season.

I hate reality but this is what's going to happen. I wish it could be avoided.

Do I sense jealousy on this thread?  They are a small school with a fun story.  They have managed to put together the right group of athletes with the right coach at the right time and they all believe in each other.

They aren't going to start football next week and blow past USF in athletics.  Our team isn't in it.  Enjoy cheering on little brother, and stop being haters.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
