Playing it Tight/Close

Been alot of talk this week about Holtz's conservative nature and playing not to lose, so I wanted to take a look at the stats just for fun. This is a comparision of games since we joined the Big East against BCS opponents (both conference and OOC):

Total Record vs BCS teams ................................23-24........................................7-13

Avg Win Margin..................................................+17.1 pts..................................+6.1 pts

Avg Loss Margin................................................ -13.6 pts...................................-9.0 pts

% of games decided by >= 7pts...........................29.8%........................................65%

% of games decided by 20+ pts...........................31.9%........................................15%

Found a few things interesting:

- We had more blowouts (win or lose) under Leavitt than we had close games (win or lose)

- I forgot how much 2010 was 2011's polar opposite, as all 5 of our victories against BCS level teams were by 8 pts or less

The numbers do bear out that Holtz's conservative approach does deliver on the close games (13 in just 2 years, verse 14 in 5 years under Leavitt). The problem with that is though, under either coach, we've never been good in close games with a total record of 9-18 in games decided by 7 pts or less.

Just some fun stats for the day.

that's the problem with close games. there is no margin for errors and as we all know we're not known for being a disciplined team that limits errors.

That lack of discipline killed us in the in WVU game last year. I think we had too many men on the field several times on their final drive.

Many of last year's games and the Rutgers games were one catch or tackle away from wins. srs. The conservative play with emphasis on defense worked last year for the Men's basketball team, why cant it work now? We just have to find a way to put it together at the end. Holtz needs to talk to Heath.
