After all they aren't a football powerhouse so basketball seems to be what a conference would really covet (and academics, cough, cough). With an unproven head coach now leading them, does a conference want to roll the dice? Say what you will about the guy, but he was a heck of a coach. They were a feel good regional team before him but he was the guy to bring them to national prominence. Don't want to restart a "which team is moving to what conference". Just a discussion on Calhoun and his retirement.

If they can get a solid coach there may not be much dropoff. Seems like a good landing spot for either an established coach or a promising young talent, like Chaka Smart (sp?). I think this hurts more than ND leaving.

I think this hurts more than ND leaving. I thought it was a big hit to the BE as well. Maybe not as much as ND leaving, but a big hit. Kevin Ollie had a decent career in the NBA and looks like he went to UConn. But can't imagine him being the draw that Calhoun was.

It's easier to win at schools with history and name brand perception, but Calhoun did the opposite. It's almost impossible to make a no-name program flourish like he did at UConn considering the facts (who the hell would want to play in that dump). But, I'm glad he's retiring this year since we need all the help we can get (playing them twice).
