If the next few years become an audition for the final re-alignment of 64 schools, then what can we do to better position ourselves academically?

I don't even know how they measure everything for the academic rankings.  Link anyone?

There's not much you can do to change a ranking overnight. Some people will cite sources like US News and Princeton Review when talking about it on the Internet, but those sources are really pretty meaningless.

There are certain foundations (i.e. Carnegie Foundation) that mean a lot though, and measurables such as endowment numbers, and memberships such as AAU.

Our freshman class profile had very similar numbers to FSU.

Not much we can do in the budget crisis.

One of the bigggest factors is faculty to student ratio. Ours has been going from bad to worse. Meanwhile, the State pumps enough money into UF and FSU to maintain their good ratio.

Otherwise, we are doing quite well, with the exception of graduation rate.

Student-faculty ratio 28:1

Don't know exactly where we should be at, but I know it is MUCH lower.

Check out other universities to get an idea.

we rank 39th in total research dollars. we rank 36th in federal research dollars. we rank 69th in endowment.

big 10 fans say research is important as all their members also belong to the AAU.

we are a top 40 public research university.

us news rankings are bogus subjective opinions.

All of that is true, and those are the things USF mentions to sell itself.

That's why, in my view, USF doing $400 million a year in high impact research, is probably more important to most ACC Presidents than our relatively poor USN&WR ranking.

I hope that's the case. our reputation for undergrads is not helping but if they truly are interested in  research than we are a very good fit.

We do more in terms of research dollars, than FSU, Miami and Syracuse to name a few in the ACC.

Our current admission policy for undergrads is even on par with more than a few ACC schools.

If the ACC, really wanted USF as a member they would overlook our USN&WR ranking and mention those other things in our favor.
