Shame. Hope he does well.

Wonder if we would have had Carnes or Godfrey in our class if we had not signed this guy.

Wasn't Gunsby added after both of them had already made their decisions?

Hard to remember, but it seemed like we heard about Carnes being told he didn't have a schollie and then Gunsby signed really quickly right after which would make it appear he was the reason Carnes was put off.  Hate to see how much of a strain we put on a major hs program for a guy that never played a down for us.  Luckily that bridge appears to have been mended.

Best of luck to him, but for the program, this is lining up pretty well.  A QB in each class (as long as all stick) gives us a steady string of developing QBs to really help strengthen that position especially if we can land a good one in this next class.

Jeff Godfrey actually committed to USF before he changed to UCF in December 2009.  He was an early enrollee there and as Ruger says Gunsby did not commit until January 2010.  Godfrey was already long gone before Gunsby committed or Skip was named coach.  I would say the CJL incident lost us Godfrey.

Yup.  Godfrey was a enrolled early so his decision was made in december.  Carnes had his offer recended shortly after Holtz was hired (in january) due to him pretty much opening his recruitment back up and Gunsby Verbaled shortly after.

I remember reading something that said Holtz had been recruiting Gunsby to ECU for awhile so it looked like he simply was "holtz's guy" vs. Carnes he didn't know really.  If you look back, Holtz was trying to bring with him everything "comfortable" he had which you can't blame him for doing as he didn't have much time before signing day when he came on.  So you really can't hold much from that first class against him as that was a huge mess.  Like the way things are shaping up now though on all fronts, especially if these transfers get their acts together and reach their potential.

From what I understand every recruit who had verbaled to CJL were going to keep their offers and it wasn't until Carnes expressed serious interest in Nebraska and wanted to visit the huskers that Gunsby got a offer from CSH to play at USF.  It was late in the game and CSH couldn't risk getting left at the alter at the QB spot so he cut ties with Carnes who appeared to be waffleing and locked up a kid he had a comfort level with in Gunsby.  If Carnes would have just stayed put instead of opening things back up Gunsby would have never been a bull.

Yeah he was definitely the guy who got his offer after the others were not on the board anymore. Was definitely a project so not surprised by this.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
