Despite what Carlton Hill himself says:

QB-thin 'Canes hope to steer Hill away from USF

-- Omar Kelly

Staff and wire reports

Posted January 18 2005

Miami is one of two finalists for the services of Jefferson County High quarterback Carlton Hill.

The Hurricanes need Hill in light of last week's decision by quarterback Derek Shaw (Oceanside, Calif.) to back out of his commitment to Miami. That leaves UM with only two quarterbacks on the roster -- and no commitments from QB recruits -- two weeks before national signing day.

Last weekend Hill visited South Florida, where he had committed in the fall. But his coach, Jeff Schaum, said the Hurricanes have about a "50-50" chance of signing the quarterback. Hill will visit UM this weekend.

"It's between USF and Miami, but Miami is Miami," Schaum said of Hill, who passed for 1,764 yards and 20 touchdowns and rushed for 888 yards and 12 touchdowns. "He committed to South Florida early on because they really need a quarterback, but Miami's always been in the picture, and they have always been recruiting him as a quarterback. He's got the tools to be an outstanding one."

While playing both quarterback and receiver Hill was named the offensive MVP of Miami's camp last summer, which featured a number of the nation's top athletes, including Shaw.

The Hurricanes landed two commitments from last week's visits:Iowa offensive lineman Matt Pipho and New Jersey defensive tackle Luqman Abdallah bring Miami's commitment total to 14.

Don't be so sure.  Some recruits might feel slighted that they are the second or third choice for a school.  Miami had cooled down with him until the QB from Cali de-committed.  Only then did they start pursuing him hard again.  He may take that as an insult.

Again, you never know.  We may get left at the alter a la Schaeffer and Ingram, or we may pull this one out.

My feeling is, if he comes great, if not, I'm sure we'll be okay.  We have Denson and Grothe.  Hill, in my opinion, would be icing on the cake.

Zactly!  Also, being the primary QB recruit for Miami would be hard to turn away from.  It does figure when USF has a solid commitment from a very good HS QB, a nationally ranked recruit coming off the practice squad and and an in-house QB with 13-14 games as a starter under his belt does USF win a QB recruiting battle with a traditional powerhouse.  How ironic.

“This is not a broken football program by any means. It just needs to be united, to get everybody on the same page, share that same vision, and really to have that standard - best is the standard.”

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
