Evaluation

Simon flashes explosion along with the athleticism we like to see for the offensive tackle position at the major level of competition. Appears to have good flexibility, agility and balance; shows good initial quickness coming out of a three point stance; his initial fit and pad level is good but... (rest is premium)

http://insider.espn.go.com/ncf/recruiting/tracker/player?recruitId=82786&season=2011&action=login&appRedirect=http%3a%2f%2finsider.espn.go.com%2fncf%2frecruiting%2ftracker%2fplayer%3frecruitId%3d82786%26season%3d2011

... must improve immediate explosion and playing strength. More capable of getting movement when presented with angles rather then straight drive blocking; may get stalemated but able to bring his feet, eventually getting movement. Displays the foot quickness to gain leverage on shaded defenders; shows he can get a hat on linebackers with good finishing results. This prospect has the balance to play on his feet well in space; flashes good short trap potential. From a two point stance we see good quick set ability; his long arms and quick hands are an asset. Demonstrates the ability to bend, slide his feet and play flat footed. Initial punch, location and extension will need refinement however these aspects of protection should improve as his playing strength does. His aggressive toughness and finishing attitude are what we like to see in offensive linemen. Simon will need some time and perhaps a red shirt year to improve his physical and technical skills. Once accomplished this guy should have a long and productive career at the BCS level of play.

Notes

Committed July 2010... Also recruited by: Duke, East Carolina, Western Kentucky, Southern Miss, Memphis...

From Scott Carter:

USF picked up a surprise commitment for the 2011 class on Friday night.

Bay Minnette (Ala.) offensive lineman David Simon verbally committed to USF, the eighth verbal commitment for the Bulls in next year’s recruiting class.

A 6-foot-4, 285-pound offensive lineman at Baldwin County High, Simon had offers from strong academic schools such as Duke, Stanford and Vanderbilt, and also had FSU and Maryland in pursuit among others.

However, he visited USF on Friday and quickly took a liking to the Bulls’ coaching staff.

“The reason I chose USF over other schools was that first of all the coaches—it is a great staff with great coaches,’’ Simon told USFBullsEye.com. “Those guys are really tight and they have set morals and they really know what they want to do with this team.

“They know what it takes to win and I believe everything they said. I think this football program will be taking off soon and I think the coaches can take it to the next level.â€

Simon joins Pahokee LB Rontavious Atkins, Sebring LB Zack Bullock, Cape Coral OLB/DE Edsel Caprice, Land O’ Lakes QB Stephen Weatherford, Milton QB Matt Floyd, Stone Mountain (Ga.) RB Willie Davis, Port Charlotte WR Alex Mut and Tallahassee Lincoln DB Chris Garye Jr. to orally commit.

Now we just need the high 4 or 5* get to really elevate this class. Then maybe other guys will join him. Holtz will make it cool to be a highly touted recruit to join the Bulls.

I am glad to see we are going out of state I think that is the one area CJL didn't go after enough.

There are good players out of the state that want to come down to florida, just like players in tampa area want

to get away from home.

I would love to see us go after some big linemen from midwest that want to get some nice weather and hot girls :)

One of the problems has been that we have by far the smallest recruiting budget in the Big East and probably one of the smallest of any of the BCS schools. Some of that has to do with being in a hot bed for recruiting.

Leavitt felt that there were enough quality Florida players that he wouldn't offer a non-state player unless he was clearly better than anyone we could get. As a result, we made less offers than just about any other school and brought in the fewest players on official visits.

It is apparent that Holtz has a different recruiting philosophy than Leavitt. He also has much more familiarity and experience recruiting around the country and has built up more long term relationships with schools in a wider geographical area.

Also, we now have a USF plane for recruiting. It certainly must be a benefit to him.

As a result, Holtz is now offering many more out of state players, especially all over the south.

I assume that USF has bumped up his recruiting budget this year to meet his requirements. Those numbers will eventually be released, so we can make a comparison.

Nice to know that "BOO" can also play DEFENSE. I'd like to see some smart bigger guys on the interior defensive line. So, maybe if we get a couple of more OT's in this class, that we are still looking at, one of them will end up switching sides.

2010 Alabama's Top 50: 21-30

24. David “Boo†Simon

Baldwin County High School (Bay Minette)

6-foot-5, 285 pounds

Offensive tackle

Scout.com three-star recruit

Considering: East Carolina, Maryland, Mississippi State, South Florida, Stanford, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest

What we know: Simon is a big offensive lineman who started his career on the other of the ball. He played defensive tackle before moving to the offense as a sophomore.

Andrew Bone says: Simon plays right tackle and will likely remain at the position on the next level. He earned several scholarship offers during the spring. He is a smart player with good technique.

Interestingly, "BOO" was previously selected to play in the annual Max Emfinger All-Star game. I wonder if he will still go there, now that he is a USF verbal.

I remember when we were recruiting DT Terrell McClain he did play, but I don't recall if he had already given USF a verbal. McClain, was voted MVP and Emfinger ranked him with SIX stars. LOL

[Here is Terrell's bio from USF:

From PENSACOLA HIGH SCHOOL: Class 3A first team all-state  ...  MVP in Max Emfinger Shreveport All-American Bowl Game  ...  Also won MVP of Pensacola East-West All-Star Game  ...   Ranked No. 44 ranked defensive tackle by Rivals.com … No. 63 by Scout.com  ...  Rivals ranks 73rd among all positions in the State of Florida  ...  65 tackles with eight sacks as a senior  ...  Also recruited by Alabama, Auburn, Florida, NC State and South Carolina.]

Baldwin County's David "Boo" Simon has emerged as one of the state's top offensive line prospects.

MOBILE, Ala. -- Baldwin County offensive lineman David "Boo" Simon has been invited to take part in an all-star football game promoted by national recruiting analyst Max Emfinger.

Simon has emerged as one of the state's top lineman prospects, with scholarship offers from Maryland and Mississippi State, said Baldwin County coach David Wofford. Other schools have also shown interest, including Duke, Boise State, Auburn, Tennessee and Florida State.

Simon plays at Baldwin County High in Bay Minette.

Emfinger's all-star game is scheduled for Jan. 8, 2011, according to Emfinger’s Web site. Simon, a 6-foot-5, 285-pound rising senior, is now ranked among the top 15 offensive tackles in the country by Emfinger.
