Another kicker: Kloss will walk on with Bulls

On Thursday afternoon, USF coach Skip Holtz lamented about his lack of depth at quarterback this spring during an interview with WDAE's Steve Duemig.

"When you go to the quarterback meeting room, there's one guy," Holtz joked, talking about starter B.J. Daniels, who himself is recovering from surgery on his non-throwing shoulder. "It's like 'I must have the wrong room.' Of course, there's 27 kickers."

Holtz is exaggerating a bit -- USF has six kickers and punters on roster this spring, with a seventh coming in this fall on scholarship in Ocala's Chris Veron. Well Holtz has added another leg to his roster, and Marvin Kloss, a kicker from Naples Barron Collier High, said Thursday he's accepted an offer to join the Bulls as a preferred walk-on.

"I committed to USF today. I let Coach (Peter) Vaas and Coach Holtz know," said Kloss, who hopes to compete for the Bulls' kickoff duties this fall as a true freshman.

Just three days earlier, Kloss had said he was walking on at Florida as long as he was accepted into school there, and he said that on Wednesday, Gators assistant Steve Addazio told him it wold be "hard to get me in" to school this fall. Kloss' academics are strong enough that he'll be on a Bright Futures scholarship at USF, which will pay for 75 percent of his tuition.

"It wasn't that hard a decision," Kloss said. "I thought about it, sat down with my coach and my parents, and overall, I just had a better feel about USF."

Kloss said he isn't guaranteed a scholarship from USF -- he previously had said he was offered a "grayshirt" to join the Bulls on scholarship in January -- but said that "Coach Holtz promised as long as I'm handling some duties on the field, I'll be on scholarship" next year.

USF will have all kinds of options in the kicking game -- senior walk-on Eric Schwartz and sophomore Maikon Bonani, who missed the 2009 season recovering from a back injury, will compete for place-kicking duties. Sophomore Justin Brockhaus-Kann and Veron are the front-runners for the punting job, and there are three other walk-on kickers -- Austin Atkins, Austin Pullaro and Renato Proia -- back from last fall.

Hopefully, one of these guys will be successful. We've needed a reliable kicker for a while.

Maybe Holtz will be able to hook them up with a job other than dangling from gondolas at BG... ;)

Holy shizzle. How many kickers do we need? lmao.

We have no excuse about any kicking duties next season.

Prep football: BC's Kloss decides on USF after being courted by Gators

By ADAM FISHER

Posted February 18, 2010 at 9:53 p.m.

NAPLES — Though he might have flirted with the University of Florida the past couple of weeks, Barron Collier kicker Marvin Kloss said his heart was always with South Florida.

Kloss, a third-team all-state selection as a senior, said Tuesday he wanted to play for the Gators if coaches could get him into the school after initially being denied admission. Thursday night, though, the kicker said he changed his mind once again and will play for South Florida next season.

“Overall, USF has always been my No. 1 pick,†Kloss said. “Florida kind of came in late and jumbled things up a bit … but I felt USF is the program for me.â€

After Florida denied Kloss because of his SAT score, he said, Gators coaches were trying to get him into school. The coaches told the kicker they thought they could get him in, Kloss said, but he didn’t want to wait.

Both programs offered preferred walk-on status to Kloss. The kicker thought he had a better chance to earn a scholarship as a sophomore with the Gators, who have just two kicking specialists under scholarship while the Bulls have three.

In dealing with Florida coaches the past week or so, however, Kloss just didn’t feel as comfortable as he did with South Florida.

“USF would have been my choice if Florida could have worked (admission) out,†Kloss said. “(The Gators) just didn’t seem too interested. With USF, I felt so comfortable with the way they treated me. They were good to me and sincere.â€

Out of all these guys, there has to be a really reliable one.  I'm really hoping Bonani will be back to full strength and will be successful.  Any news on him?

Is there a limit to how many total players or total walk-on players can be on the roster, or is 85 the only limit that matters?

USF has traditionally capped its offseason roster at 105 players, with 110 once school starts.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
