USF Inks Head Coaching Deal

TAMPA – Less than a week after terminating long-time coach Jim Leavitt, the administration of the University of South Florida is expected to announce a successor sometime Wednesday afternoon. For financial and stability reasons, Athletic Director Doug Woolard and USF President Judy Genshaft have decided to adopt a head coach by committee scheme for the 2010 season, and possibly beyond. “It's a landmark step, watershed, really. We are so excited and so proud to be the first major football program to adopt this,†Genshaft said Tuesday night.

Many details of the contract are still being finalized, however most has been solidified. Beginning February 1st, Offensive Coordinator Mike Canales will run the football team every Monday and Tuesday and Running Backs Coach/Recruiting Specialist Carl Franks will take the helm Thursdays and Fridays. Defensive Coordinator Joe Tresey and Co-Defensive coordinator David Blackwell will alternate Wednesdays. Game day responsibilities will be decided either on a rock-paper-scissors basis or by calling “Shotgun†(only counts if the calling party can see the field). Early discussions considered selling off coaching responsibilities at this years athletics auction.

Overall, the staff is more than satisfied with the decision, emphasizing the familiarity between players and coaches. “We felt it was important to give these kids a sense of family, we know how much they miss us while we're on the road doing our (recruiting) trips,†remarks Tresey, “A lot of times we're gone so long the first thing we get when we walk in the door is a big hug from everyone. This will really give us some time to really bond with them, maybe build a tree house, do some arts and crafts, I don't know, guy stuff. I'm new to this.â€

Coach Franks, on the other hand, is no stranger to the situation. As the former head coach at Duke University, he knows that gaining player's trust as the new head man won't come quickly. “It's going to be awkward at first. I don't expect them to call me Coach right away. Mr. Franks is fine for now. 'Coach' will come later, after we throw the ball around a bit, go to the games, get some ice cream. The crucial thing is that we get some stability in these young men's lives.â€

Stability is important in a transitioning program, especially when the legal battle between the university and Leavitt has quickly turned ugly. USF filed a restraining order Monday against it's former head man, requiring him to keep at least 500 feet from the athletics facility at all times. The move came in response to reports over the weekend claiming that Leavitt was seen idling outside of the building in a white van watching for players to leave. He denied those allegations “strongly†on Tuesday stating he was running wind sprints all weekend.

The contract will also feature a rich incentive package, rewarding the staff for reaching milestones in the upcoming season. A Big East championship will net them $250,000 to share; a BCS victory adds another $250,000. Additionally the staff will be rewarded up to $100,000 if starting quarterback B.J. Daniels completes a pass between the hash marks in 2010.

Hopefully the guys pitch in to give BJ a kickback if he earns them the final bonus, but I hope they are not banking on it unless BJ runs backwards 30 yards then passes it like in good old techmo bowl.

Link?

No link; it's just what I did at work today in between processing workers comp claims for ruptured buttocks and triple hernias. Nothing inspires creativity like a deflated cheek.
