I was looking at past USF years and I noticed we went 10-2 in 2002...why were we not in a bowl game that year??

We were an independent then. The following year we went into CUSA.  I believe we would have had an offer from the Hawaii Bowl  if ECU beat Cincinnati but that did not happen.

9-2 with losses to Oklahoma and Arkansas.  We were independent so no bowl tie-in.  Also, a lot less bowls so options as an at-large very limited.

It was 9-2.

We didn't belong to a conference at the time.

Leavitt threatened to run naked in Tampa if we didn't go to a bowl.

We had a conditional bid (from C-USA) to the Hawaii bowl, but it depended on the outcome of a game between two C-USA teams. As it turned out, the team we needed to root for lost and USF stayed home:

Flashback:

TAMPA - The Hawaii Bowl extended a conditional bid to South Florida on Wednesday afternoon if Cincinnati loses to East Carolina on Friday.

A Cincinnati loss would send the Bulls (9-2) to Honolulu to play Hawaii (9-3) on Christmas Day. If Cincinnati wins - Tulane goes to Hawaii and Cincinnati to the New Orleans Bowl - the Bulls would have to hope for another bowl bid.

The Motor City Bowl is considering USF for an at-large spot to play Toledo on Dec. 26 in Detroit.

Also, the Seattle Bowl will need an at-large team - if Washington State beats UCLA - but likely will opt for a Big East team, making USF's best options Hawaii or Motor City.

"We're pleased that the ConAgra Foods Hawaii Bowl considers the University of South Florida worthy of a bowl bid," USF athletic director Lee Roy Selmon said. "We're excited for our players, who earned this recognition with their hard work and dedication on the field.

"They're the ones who go through the practices, work through injuries and dedicate themselves to attending class and playing college football and they deserve everything good that comes their way. We never lose sight of the fact that college athletics is about the student-athletes."

Things have changed a lot in a mere seven years, haven't they?

In what way, that we haven't gone 9 - 2 since?  Or that we get into a bowl by going 7 - 5?

BOTH...we should be thankful we are in the position we are in.  We could be UCF...still clamoring for attention...lol

We are doing fine.
