Wow People on this board follow CJL so blindly that they are really convinced that this was his plan the whole time.  ::)

it's kind of sickening when you think about it.  this was obviously an error on leavitt's part and we're lucky tresey was still around and it didn't hurt us in the end.  tresey could have found a job and we would have been completely S.O.L.

In my memory, this is the first MAJOR OUTSIDE HIRE CJL has made.  His inexperience showed. . . . . . but he is human and I am going to give him every benefit of the doubt.

When you factor in USF football's unprecedented rapid ascent into a nationally recognized football program, CJL's first external hire seemed especially clumsy because he (along with all of us) had a valuation problem determining what a job at USF really meant to others outside the program (IMO, Ekerler and Ash would jump at the chance to be Co-DC's at Texas. . . . but not USF).

In the end we realized that coaches in the BE think this place is a good place to work while jackass coaches in Big12 country still see us as a step down.

In the end, CJL, who had grown content over the years, had to learn on the fly and conduct a national search for a DC when he (along with others) didn't understand USF's (and CJL's) national perception. . . . . . lesson learned.

unprecedented?  boise state has been in Div 1-A less than we have and they already have 1 BCS invite/win.  experience has nothing to do with it-- it's common sense.  you don't go around offering co-coordinator positions out and you sure as hell don't NOT offer the former DC of your conference's champion the job right there on the spot.  Now we're gonna have to pick up the slack and catch up for lost time by installing a defense before the spring game.

in the long run, this was a good move, but in the short run, we got screwed over due to hiring ineptitude.  the sad thing is that it didn't have to be this way.

Sometimes I think Leavitt reads this board, and decides to screw with everyone on here for a little while. Then after everyone goes completely insane, he just goes and does what we wanted him to do in the first place.

ummmmm NO!

We still need a LB coach for the spring game.  ;)

Defensive Guru Jim Tresey Joins USF as Coordinator

Release: 03/04/2009

TAMPA – University of South Florida head coach Jim Leavitt announced the hiring of Jim Tresey to the position of defensive coordinator.  Tresey will also oversee the secondary for USF's defense.

“I don’t know that I need to say much about Coach Tresey, his resume and experience at the BCS level tells the story,†said USF head coach Jim Leavitt.  “We are excited about him joining our staff and we’re excited that we can get right into spring practice with him.â€

Tresey is just months removed from helping lead Cincinnati to the 2008 BIG EAST Championship and the 2009 Fed Ex Orange Bowl.

The Bulls offense and quarterback Matt Grothe have to be just as excited to bring the defensive guru into the fold.  Tresey led a Bearcat defense that was able to limit the Bulls to 10 points in 2008 and force eight turnovers in 2007.

Tresey authored a Cincinnati defense that tied USF for the national lead in turnovers and interceptions in 2007. A pair of Bearcat defenders earned all-America honors and two others were selected in the 2008 NFL Draft. UC finished second in the BIG EAST in scoring defense (18.8 ) and rush defense (114.2) and put five of 11 defensive starters on the all-BIG EAST team.

Tresey joined Brian Kelly's staff at Central Michigan in 2006 and quickly implemented a style that forced 29 turnovers and 31 sacks in 14 games. His MAC Championship defense registered four players with all-league plaudits.

Two seasons prior to joining the CMU staff, Tresey was defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Georgia Southern. The Eagles' defense ranked fourth nationally in total defense in 2004. While in Statesboro, Tresey helped lead the Eagles to back-to-back NCAA Division I-AA Playoff appearances. He also mentored a pair of all-Southern Conference linebackers.

A 13-year college coaching veteran, Tresey managed the defense and coached defensive backs at Akron during the 2002-03 seasons. He served the previous three years (1999- 2001) as defensive secondary coach at Virginia Military Institute. Tresey began his college coaching career as the defensive coordinator at Otterbein in 1995.

Tresey moved to the collegiate ranks after serving as a decorated high school mentor. After leading Fredericktown to Ohio's Division IV state semifinals in 1989,

Tresey was voted the UPI Ohio Division IV Coach of the Year. He was inducted into the Fredericktown High School Athletics Hall of Fame in 1999.

No stranger to Southwest Ohio, Tresey served four seasons as head coach at Middletown High School. He also has prior head coaching stops at New Philadelphia (Ohio) High School and Mechanicsburg (Pa.) High School.

Tresey is a 1982 graduate of Ohio State with a bachelor of science degree in education. He earned his master's of education in sports science from Ashland University in 1997.

I think that USF was probably pushing CJL to interview several candidates before making a hire, so he went out and did that. He also came up with the whole co-DC idea to make the job way less appealing so that he could really make an effort to "hire" these other guys, but knowing full well that they wouldn't accept, he could get the guy he wanted all along.

UMMMMM NOOO!

obvious Jim wanted to do the co -dc thing with treasy too and he didnt want it, nor can u blame him.  then he was shocked that everyone in the market didnt want it either. his pitch was probably me and stoops did it and their response was this isnt back in the day Jimbo.

so he retracted his wrong theory and offerend the job outright to Treasy.

im happy Leavitt realized he is wrong and offered the right guy for the job.  This guy did great at Cincy imagine what he can do with our talent.

What some seem to want to miss completely is WHY was Leavitt offering the Co-DC jobs.

USF doesnt have the big money other BCS schools have so by combining the DC job salary and the salary of a LB or DB asst coach job. He would be able to offer the two Co-DC that would cover those posts a salary above what an asst. would make and thus try to get two guys more qualified. When that didnt work and he had to go with the full DC job to Tresey it means that there are less $$$ available for the LB asst that he has to get.

So he tried what in his book would have given him the best situatiion.

You guys want to change that? Then start giving big money to athletics so that our asst coaches can get paid what the top BCS schools are paying. Until that happens USF will be a stepping stone for asst coaches and will have to to offer Co-DC and Co-OC jobs in the hope of getting better candidates to say yes.

First, Boise has been 1-A since 1996, but they've been playing football since 1933.  USF's first year as a program was 1996 and first year on-field was 1997.

Second, Leavitt was a co-D Coordinator at K-State.  We know you don't think much of Leavitt, but his co-D coordinator was Bob Stoops.  Someone should have told Snyder at K State that he was not supposed to have Stoops as a co-anything.
