I went to the U of Texas web site.  It looks like the hand signal might in fact be trademarked...  I also reviewed their site to see if it was in fact the same hand sign, and it appears to be identical....

i went to that site too.  but the answers i was looking for werent in my face and it kind of required me to look around the site.  i got bored and exited.
