ND is a nice fit for BE currently even w/o football.

Hopefully a non-BCS school in the east will catch fire (unfortunately this is most likely to be a Sunshine state program) and then ND can be given the ultimatum.

If they split, door is open for a full member that brings football to 9 teams.

2015-2017 is a good guess for when this potentially comes down.

ND competes for the championship in every sport in the Big East.  Men's Soccer, Women's Soccer, Tennis, Baseball, Track & Field, Women's Hoops, Men's Hoops, etc.  You can't get a better program than what ND offers for all of its sports.  Plus, academically speaking, its second to none in pretty much the entire NCAA in Graduation Rates for athletes.

They are a great fit to the Big East for every sport but football.  If they want to be on their own for football thats fine, then they need to have their own bowl tie-ins not tied to the Big East.

What is the great alternative to ND today?

I don't see it.  As JoeB states, all of their programs compete at a high level in BE play.

They will be playing 3 home & home series with BE football teams.  This certainly helps those BE programs and consequently, the entire league.

Suggest a viable alternative or just hush.

Hopefully the BE will reform to add football teams, drop some of the basketball-only teams and in that process, drop ND.  smazza is right, ND gets everything and the BE gets the shaft.

we could always just steal teams that are already established and have a 10-team conference.
