Fans pick Iowa St. helmet, uniform

AMES, Iowa (AP) -- Iowa State broke the mold when it let its fans help pick a new helmet logo. The online voting produced an overwhelming winner -- and a surprising change in the school's original plans.

Iowa State unveiled a new helmet logo and football uniforms Wednesday. The school will go with the large "I" and interlocking "State" design over two other choices -- a block "ISU" and a cursive "Cyclones" -- presented to fans for a vote in August.

Officials said that a "strong majority" of its fans voted for the winning design. But they also went online to voice their displeasure over the school's plan to wear white helmets. The color of the helmets wasn't up for debate, but the response was such that athletic department officials listened.

Iowa State's new helmet will be cardinal, with old-school gray face masks, and feature the new logo. The unveiling capped a six-month process that included more than 35,000 online votes and more than 1,500 e-mails from fans.

Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard said that fans, through comment boxes and e-mails, expressed concern that a white helmet would conflict with the school's plan to return to its traditional cardinal and gold color scheme.

"Our staff initially proposed the concept of a white helmet to help make our new logo stand out," Pollard said. "We've chosen a cardinal helmet because it's what the majority of our fans wanted."

The new logo will be implemented for all Iowa State sports teams. So will the new color scheme, which features a darker shade of cardinal and more extensive use of gold. The school has eliminated navy blue from its color scheme.

Iowa State also listened to fan comments on its new football uniforms. The new design was tailored after the 1977 throwbacks that became a fan favorite when the Cyclones wore them two weeks ago against Iowa.

The home uniforms will feature a cardinal jersey with gold shoulder stripes and gold pants. The road uniforms will have white jerseys and cardinal and gold stripes, and either gold or cardinal pants.

The new logo will be featured at the 50-yard line at Jack Trice Stadium and at half court at Hilton Coliseum. Eventually, it will replace the current logo at all Iowa State athletic facilities.

One aspect of Iowa State's current identity will remain, however. The school's mascot "Cy" will continue in its capacity as the school's goodwill ambassador, officials said.
