USF Receives Signed Letter of Intent From LB Donte Spires

TAMPA, FLA. (February 12, 2007) -- Donte Spires, a linebacker at Pearl River Community College, has signed a national letter of intent to join USF in the fall. Spires is originally from Tampa, where he played for Plant High. His signing brings the 2007 USF Recruiting Class to 26 members, including four who are already enrolled in classes this spring.

Originally signed with USF out of Plant High in 2005, but played for two years at Pearl River… First team Gridwire All-America for Pearl River in 2005…Also earned JUCO al-state…Top defensive player for a team that reached the Junior College National Championship Game (Pilgrim Bowl) in 2006…Third team all-state as a high school senior in 2004 when he had 133 tackles, including 101 solo stops and 11 tackles for loss…Had two sacks…Second team all-Suncoast and First Team all-Western Conference…First team all-county as well…Finalist for Hillsborough County’s Guy Toph and Golden Helmet awards…Three-year letterman…Coached by Tim Hatten at Pearl River and Bob Weiner at Plant.

What am I missing?  Did he not play (redshirt) his first year up there?

Right. He didn't play in 2005. I don't even think he was at Pearl River in fall 2005. He has three years of eligibility.

Is Spires really 6'3", 240?

I watched him in that JuCo National Championship game, and he didn't look quite that big.

I'm guessing these numbers are a bit inflated as is usually the case with most "measurables."

He played very well.  Good speed & nose for the ball.

Just doubt he's as big as listed.
