Tale of the Tape: Pizza Bowl - The Coaches

By Pirate Illustrated – Rivals.com

THE COACHES

SKIP HOLTZ (Notre Dame '86) is 12-11 (.522) in his second season at East Carolina,

while overall, he is in year seven as a collegiate head coach with a 46-34 (.575)

record. When he became ECU's 19th all-time head football coach Dec. 3, 2004, Holtz

officially finished a six-year stint as South Carolina's assistant head coach, offensive

coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

While at South Carolina, Holtz helped lead the Gamecocks to back-to-back

Outback Bowl wins over Ohio State (2001-2002) and was recognized as one of the

winners of the Assistant Coach-of-the-Year Award by the All-American Football Foundation.

From 1994 to 1998, Holtz guided the Connecticut program to unprecedented

success in the school's 100-year history as its head coach. UConn was a consistent

member of the NCAA I-AA Top 25 polls during his last four seasons, which included a

school-record 10-win, post-season playoff campaign in 1998. Prior to his success at

Connecticut, Holtz spent four seasons at alma mater Notre Dame and served as the

Fighting Irish's offensive coordinator in 1992 and 1993 - a period which resulted in a

21-2-1 record and top 10 national ranks in total offense and scoring offense.

JIM LEAVITT (Missouri '78) is 69-43 (.616) in his eighth season heading the football program at USF. He is the only coach in Bulls' history after accepting the appointment to initiate the program on Dec. 3, 1995. He has also served on the defensive staffs at Kansas State ('90-95), Iowa ('89), Morningside ('82-87), Dubuque ('80-81) and Missouri ('78-79) prior to his move to Tampa.

And that's just another reason they belong in the Big East, Mike.  I almost typed that with a straight face.   ;D

And you would think they would atleast give Leavitt some respect for the great Defensive turnaround at K-State.

And to think we avg. 14 games each of those 8 seasons  ;)

Skip Holtz had little to do with what ND did in '92 and '93.  They were already an offensive juggernaut, with the likes of Jerome Bettis and Rick Mirer.  They probably put as many players in the pros during those years as any other school in the country (give or take one or two).

In 100 years of football at UConn they had never won more than 8 games and only 3 times. Holtz turned that program and had  7, 8, & 10 win seasons. He also took them to their first and only D1aa playoff.

"He is a young and extremely gifted offensive mind, a developer of high-level talent and an elite national recruiter who brings the experience of having played an integral role from the beginning in helping to build one of the most successful programs in college football."

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
