South Florida 37, North Carolina 20

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -- Ricky Ponton returned from a six-game suspension and ran for 101 yards and two touchdowns to carry South Florida to a 37-20 victory over North Carolina on Saturday.

Ponton was one of three players suspended by South Florida (5-2) before the season for violation of unspecified school policy. Each player was given a six-game suspension.

North Carolina (1-5) dropped its third straight game. After the Tar Heels took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, quarterback Cam Sexton missed nine straight passes. He threw a touchdown pass to Jon Hamlett with 33 seconds left in the third quarter, and Connor Barth kicked two field goals, including a career-long 52-yarder earlier in the period.

South Florida countered Ronnie McGill's 15-yard scoring run midway through the first quarter with Taurus Johnson's 19-yard touchdown run on a reverse with 1:13 left in the period.

The Golden Bulls converted two interceptions into touchdowns. After Stephen Nicholas' first career interception at the North Carolina 35, Matt Grothe tossed a 21-yard touchdown pass to S.J. Green with 12:03 left in the half.

Danny Verpaele's interception and 26-yard return set up Ponton's 1-yard burst with 9:10 left before halftime. Ponton had a 2-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter.

Benjamin Williams capped a 71-yard drive off the opening kickoff in the second half with a 1-yard score, giving South Florida a 27-10 lead.

"Golden Bulls"? If I'm not mistaken the "golden" was dropped when we went from the brahmans to the BULLS.

Thats the 2nd article i've seen today that has referred to us as the Golden Bulls  >:(

Here's the first from the east coast gnat lovers who write a USF column about twice a year.

Man, we haven't had golden in our name since we dropped the golden brahmans.  Ridiculous.

We've never been the Golden Bulls.  We were the Golden Brahmans until the '70s.

Sounds like a lazy reporter with a fragment of information.  just enough info to be dangerous.

We also got FSU.  Admittedly, I can see THAT confusion.  People doing the ACC must be fairly used to FSU beating up on the Tarheels, and with FSU being down this year perhaps they thought they switched colors for a spark?

Seriously.  I've said this before, but these guys are being payed to do this job.  They're "pros".  They should be able to handle the basics, yet can't.  People getting payed for that job should be getting the mascots of UC Davis and Trinity community college correctly if they're calling their games.  What ever happened to professionalism?  Saaaad.

Professionalism.  On the drive up to UNC we watched the Rutgers game again (somehow made it onto a DVD) and announcers are horrible nowadays.  "If Rutgers goes up 14-0, USF will be in a hole."  No!  Really!  And "If USF can stop the run, Rutgers will have to rely on Teel."  No way!

We made fun of announcers all the way up watching that game thinking since this game was on the "U", maybe they would take walk-up announcers before gametime.

They should do their homework, and they should not be calling us anything but USF Bulls or the South Florida Bulls.

Last I checked the scoreboard doesn't have a spot for current bank balance on it.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
