Gulf Blanks Rival Pasco

By CRISTINA LEDRA The Tampa Tribune

Published: Oct 13, 2006

NEW PORT RICHEY - It took Gulf the first 10 plays of the game to go out to a two touchdown lead on Pasco Friday night.

Anyone expecting the Buccaneers to give a lead like that up hadn't yet seen their defense.

For the second week in a row the Bucs earned a shutout, beating Pasco 22-0.

"If we lost we were done," Gulf coach Jay Fulmer said. "It was just that simple. The coaches knew it, the players knew it, the fans knew. Everybody knew what was at stake. Our kids just responded very well."

Gulf is now in second place in Class 3A-District 8 with Pasco.

The game was the Bucs' to lose from the opening possession when Alton Voss completed a 20-yard pass to Shawn Williamson then followed that up with a 50-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Jackson.

They just never let up.

Two plays later, Voss grabbed an interception and ran it back 49 yards to put Gulf in scoring position at the Pasco 39-yard line. After an incomplete pass, Voss then ran 39-yards for a touchdown at the 10:05 mark of the first quarter.

Voss finished the game going 7-for-18 for 95 yards passing with 71 yards rushing and three touchdowns total (two passing, one rushing) and was equally impressive on defense with two interceptions.

Gulf's Marcus Neeson also had two interceptions.

The Buccaneers preyed on the Pasco secondary. The result was four picks on the Pirates while the Bucs' defense allowed just 47 yards passing.

"They played a very good football game," Pasco coach Dale Caparaso said. "Tonight they were heck of a lot better than we were. They were way more prepared than we were. They took it to us."

The problems were plentiful for Pasco. From about a dozen penalties, one of which was an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that led to a Gulf touchdown right before the first half expired (a 6-yard pass from Voss to Williamson), and a lack of offense in general. The Pirates never made it into the red zone.

Three additional penalties after Gulf's third touchdown led to the ejection of Pasco's Greg Pye and McClain Bryant.

Voss had to basically fall down to get the 2-point conversion to put the Bucs up 22-0.

"We took advantage of everything Pasco gave us," Voss said.

Gulf running back Julian Ford and linebacker Timmy Longnecker were banged up toward the end of the game. Ford appeared to twist his ankle and had to be helped off the field and Longnecker appeared to sustain a jaw injury.

The teams had more than 25 penalties between them.

Pasco 0 0 0 0 - 0

Gulf 14 8 0 0 - 22

G - Jackson 50 pass from Voss (Munoz kick)

G - Voss 38 run (Munoz kick)

G - Williamson 6 pass from Voss (Voss run)

that's a ridiculous college football game for 1 guy.  2 passing TDs, 1 rushing TD, 2 INTs on defense with 1 returned for a TD.  It's too bad he can't play both ways in college.  I wonder how he would rank just as a defensive recruit.

This guy is a beast, we have no safeties who move the pile on run support. putting this guy back there as a strong safety might make sense to have him learn the college game, while knocking some heads.

What was the story on the Gulf game last night? They got destroyed and Voss didn't play at all. The Trib only had a little blurb but it sounded like the game was almost an exhibition game ...

It wasn't a district game, so that might be why they held him out. They are close to making the playoffs for the first time ever.
