:o Not a vote of confidence for a two year SR "starter"  :o

I can understand that comment about a RS FR

ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT: One day after coach Jim Leavitt praised his quarterbacks' leadership skills, offensive coordinator Rod Smith said senior Pat Julmiste and redshirt freshman Matt Grothe both have a busy month ahead of them.

"I don't really think either one is ready to be the starter right yet," Smith said. "Pat is probably the most prepared, but both of them still have a lot of work to do and will have to compete."

Smith has reasonable expectations from the position, with improved consistency a must.

"I want a guy who's going to make plays," Smith said. "He doesn't have to be perfect. I want a guy who can get that ball to our receivers when they're open and who doesn't fumble the ball. I don't need a Heisman Trophy candidate. I need a guy who is consistent."

And from the Trib.

Smith said. "... but he has to be better than what he was last year for us to have a chance to win."

Unless it was a poor attempt to copy one of Leavitt's motivational techniques, it was sort of a bizarre statement to make on the second day of practice.  Even Leavitt said something to the effect that coaches should not make evaluations about players in the first couple of days of practive.

So we lose one to weed/grades and the other two STILL aren't ready despite one being a senior and the other having a whole season to learn the system and get better?!

Looking forward to another season of the offensive juggernaut that is the USF offense.

If you actually think about it and read what he said, it's the exact right thing to say on only the second day of practice.

What did Smith say that was so off base? It was the same thing most coaches would say in the same siutation...

1) They have a lot of work

2) I just want someone consistent

3) We didn't perform well at the position last year

Where is that making some INSANE remark?

I'm shocked at this information knowing how hard PJ worked this offseason.   ::)

You people are ridiculous. He didn't say anything extraordinary here...they've been in practice for two **** days. Relax.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."

    Terry Lucas, 09/26/22
