The Yunnan Honghe Bulls:

Chinese Basketball Association Drafts Americans

This is an amazing deal. They invite a lot of top American basketball players who are a rung below NBA quality to the US Basketball Academy in central Oregon. Representatives of the Chinese professional teams are there, and everyone works out for a while. Then the Chinese teams hold a draft, and the players rights get divvied up around the Chinese league.

Then here's the crazy part: they negotiate and sign contracts that day. Kids, this is not a drill. You're going to China.

Here is the press release explaining who's going where.

....

Second round—

12. Yunnan Honghe Bulls: B. B. Waldon, forward, South Florida (’02)

is china trying to get their teams better fast by playing against decent competition?

if they export their best players to good international teams inc. NBA,

they could in short order field a decent team by 2008

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."

    Terry Lucas, 09/26/22
