Chris Simms: Dad 'big fan' of Leavitt

We broke news two weeks ago about USF being in the hunt for Matt Simms, a talented quarterback recruit from New Jersey and the younger brother of Bucs QB Chris and son of longtime Giants star Phil Simms. Our lead Bucs writer, Rick Stroud, helped me out and caught Chris at Tuesday's workout at One Buc Place to ask him about his brother and USF.

Stroud: Other than the fact you're here in Tampa, what does Matt like about USF?

Chris Simms: "I think he saw my college career and he wants to go somewhere where he's going to learn a lot instead of maybe just going to the big program. He's trying to plan for the future somewhat. He's heard me talk about it. The coach at USF, coach Leavitt, is a great guy and my dad is a big fan on his as well. So he's definitely checking them out."

Stroud: Does taking a program to new heights appeal to him?

Chris Simms: "I think for a quarterback, I know me personally, when I went to Texas at the time they were coming off a 3-8 season. So I think if you're a true competitor you kind of relish that opportunity to go somewhere and bring them to the top."

Stroud: When will he make a decision?

Chris Simms: "He'll probably wait until after the year. I don't think he'll do anything rash. He really hasn't gotten to visit much, so he wants to do that."

So while Matt is likely undecided for several months, Chris and his wife Danielle did welcome a new family member to Tampa on Sunday: their first child, daughter Sienna Rose Simms. How's that for a happy Father's Day ...
