Bulls expected to lose a few recruits they signed in February, and it looks like Miami Washington quarterback Alwan Lee is one of them. His troubles were first reported Tuesday by Josh Newberg at usfnation.com, and I got Lee on the phone Tuesday night. Because of academic problems -- a passing SAT score wasn't accepted by the NCAA clearinghouse -- he's planning on going to Mississippi Gulf Coast Junior College, starting with summer classes July 5. He said unless that ruling on the score is reversed, something he doesn't expect, he's at least two years removed from getting to USF. He also said he hasn't heard from Bulls coaches in a while, which may hint that they saw the academic problems coming. That puts the Bulls at four scholarship QBs for the fall, with Nate Allen as the lone freshman.

He was one of those rumored to have academic troubles from the beginning. Best of luck to him.

Now you know why Leavitt seemed to be stockpiling QBs...

We have got to start looking elsewhere for good recruits. I am sick and tired of hearing about the recruits we have gotten, only to hear that they are academically ineligible. Someone is not doing their job in making sure these kids are eligible. Major teams may have 1 or 2, but we seem to have 5-6 or more. Quit looking just to Florida for recruits. I am sure there are many states that have quality players that have the grades. We are still in the trailer mentality. It's time to quit the speculation for a player, only to find out he's a bust. We will never advance to the next level, if we keep on this track. I am all for giving a kid a chance, but where it's borderline or a lost cause but he is a blue chipper, give the schollie to one that deserves it!    Reaper

Reaper,

It's the nature of the beast with a young and smaller funded program. We don't have the money and prestige that FSU/Miami/Florida have when it comes to recruiting. Nor do we have the kids that grew up wanting to play for our school (i.e. - Drew Weatherford at FSU, Chris Rainey at UF).

In most cases we have to take chances on players that are borderline not qualifying because we don't have the luxeries of the other schools to turn elsewhere. As for the other states, we'd have the same problem anywhere close at this point.

These are the schools that raid these closest states:

Georgia - UGA, GT, Auburn and FSU

Alabama - Bama and Auburn

Mississippi - Ole Miss, Miss St, and Alabama

We're expanding our recruiting zone to include parts of Georgia and parts of NJ next year, which is a start. Remember we don't have an athletic use only private plane that most BCS schools have, so it hard to expand a lot at this point.

However, with so many schools coming in to Florida to garner recruits, why worry that much about going out of state?

Over the years we'll pull in more of the players that can qualify and make the team. It's just one of the struggles of growing at this point. We're not the only school in this boat.

Thats the reason we always give more scholarships than spots available. This will happen yearly, some work out and some dont.
