It is too contrived to be judged.  The trick plays scared the heck out of me until I realized it was more for the defense (hopefully) than the offense.  In scrimmages it is too scripted to judge what we would do in certain circumstances.

Everything was probably very vanilla by design.  One reason is to not tip our hand and the other was that maybe the split squad made it difficult to run the more intricate plays.

Defense was basic all night.  The trick plays are a royal pain.  I counted 4 end-arounds, a flanker pass (pulled down and run), a halfback pass (pulled down and run) and a throwback pass back to the QB (was a forward pass) which Severino pulled down and ran.  Rather than working on fundamentals for 7 more plays, they did this stuff.  Hopefully, they were doing it more for the defense than the offense.

What are the odds Leavitt DARED Smith to call these just to prove they don't work?  ;)

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."

    Terry Lucas, 09/26/22
