Nice win for the ladies, comfortably ahead the entire second half.

Syracuse is big but not very good.  Jessica was kinda forcing her offense at the end, would like to see her find some teammates especially when her legs aren't all there as she plays 40 minutes... but when you're that good, I guess you feel like you're never going to miss.  Have to find a way to get some effective bench play so we don't wear down throughout the season.

Quite possibly one of the five worst officiated games I've ever seen.  Two absolutely horrendous refs who were literally making it up as they went along, and one who looked helpless while watching her crewmates.  I hate to knock the officiating like that, but this is BIG EAST basketball.  If it was closer the crew might have decided the game, and that's never good.  Hopefully the league office gets the tape.

Dickson, USF Get Much-Needed Big East Win

Skip directly to the full story.

A Tribune staff, wire report

Published: Jan 19, 2006

TAMPA - It's become a question no opposing coach has found an answer to this season: How do you stop USF junior Jessica Dickson?

Syracuse coach Keith Cieplicki was added to the list Wednesday as Dickson, the nation's leading scorer, scored right at her average with 25 points, helping the Bulls get a 73-55 Big East Conference victory over the Orange in front of 605 at the Sun Dome.

Dickson was nine of 25 from the field, including three of eight from 3-point range, as the Bulls (12-6, 2-3) ended a three-game losing streak.

"Hey, she missed a few more than maybe she usually does," said Cieplicki, noting Dickson shot 36 percent, below her 46 percent season average.

Dickson continued her torrid scoring, and the Bulls placed three others in double figures. Rachel Sheats had 12 points, while Nalini Miller and Shantia Grace added 10 apiece.

Though the game ended with a lopsided score, Syracuse (7-10, 0-6) didn't go down without a fight. After USF built a 59-41 lead with 7:53 remaining in the game, the Orange responded with an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to get back to within 10 points.

But the Bulls countered with a 10-2 run to push the lead to 69-51 with just more than two minutes left, giving Dickson a chance to spend the last part of the game on the bench. "I was very happy to take a little rest," Dickson said.

Bulls get breather to end frustrating run

By MIKE CAMUNAS

Published January 19, 2006

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TAMPA - USF's 73-55 win over Syracuse on Wednesday at the Sun Dome wasn't very exciting.

The Bulls (12-6, 2-3 Big East) probably prefer it that way. After ending a three-game skid, all by two points or fewer, the Bulls are just eight points from being undefeated in their new conference.

"Well, maybe now everyone will lighten up," coach Jose Fernandez said. "Maybe they'll get back on the bandwagon. We lost three games; the season's not over. We could very easily be 5-0 in the league, because we played well tonight, took 70 shots. That's a lot of possessions."

Junior Jessica Dickson, the nation's leader scorer, had 25 points against the Orange (7-10, 0-6) and moved to third on the school's all-time list with 1,524 points. USF earned its largest margin of victory since 87-49 over North Florida on Dec. 28, and Syracuse got no closer than 10 in the second half.

Still, the Bulls, who shot only 38 percent, said they needed more consistency.

"We came out and didn't play to our potential," junior Nalini Miller said. "But at the (first) media timeout, we said we're not going to let this one slip away again."

Fernandez said the Bulls got a "much-needed spark" from their three main bench players, freshman Jessica Jackson, sophomore ChiChi Opkaleke and senior Sharon Cambridge, who combined for 11 points. Rachael Sheats had 12 points and Miller and Shantia Grace 10 each.
