Bulls' QB Battle Starting To Pick Up Steam

TAMPA - After the first week of the University of South Florida's practices, the battle for the Bulls' starting quarterback remains virtually a dead heat between junior incumbent Pat Julmiste and sophomore Courtney Denson.

"Pat is slightly ahead right now because of his experience, but Courtney is coming on rapidly," USF offensive coordinator Rod Smith said. "He's made a big push. He seems to be getting more comfortable and that's helped him. He's being more productive."

Last week Smith said he wanted someone to separate themselves as the clear cut starter, but said he's not disappointed no one has done so yet.

"It's a good thing because both are playing well, that's the pleasing part," Smith said. "Instead of getting one separating and one guy being average, both have played real well. I think we'll have two good ones as the season goes on and then we can bring freshman Carlton Hill along."

Smith said Denson would work with the first-team offense for the next several days. Julmiste and Hill also will get work with the first offense.

"All three have looked good," Smith said. "Carlton is behind the other two because of his inexperience, but he has a lot of potential."

Grothe is going to red shirt and everyone knows it.  You only get so many reps in and you have to pick your best guys.  if he was one of those then he would get the reps.  He may eventualy become the man but not now.

Oh, by the way I am excited.  Sounds like the guy alot of us thought was going to become the starting QB is even with the starter in a very short time.  You have to believe that the upside is greater for Denson having not played two years with the team but he still has to seperate himself.

what was denson doing for the whole of last year.

he should be so tight with the playbook the it is his second skin

the experience difference should only be playing time and his "skill set"

should overcome that

he should have pulled even in the spring and well on his way to unseating PJ by now.

so i do not have high hopes for him beating out PJ so clearly that JL won't go with the devil he knows

Grothe should redshirt... give him a year to practice... and grow and learn.. and U will have a better QB for the 4 years that follow. Perfect situation would be for one of the other 2 to really do well and grothe be a back up for a year before being a starter.. much like FSU did for years.. 1 redshirt... 2 back up years then 2 great years as a starter..

Denson spent the year running the scout team.  You don't get reps in our playbook when running the scout team.  Without reps it's a little hard to learn the system.  Memorization.....well, it could help a little but that's better if you are craming for a test.
