Has been almost nonexistent. 7 games into the season we were still worrying about blocked kicks. The offense has been far less than spectacular. Defense has stayed relatively solid until the end of the last two games.   We were 100% exposed

This is a leadership issue. Hubris as it is often called.  Its the world's fault for not recognizing how good you are.  Unfortunately the world is bigger, stronger, faster, and smarter than your belief in being bigger, stronger, faster and smarter than the rest of the world.  thus,  you lose when objectively you should have won going away

Cognitive Dissonance is a funny thing.  The need to keep the world consistent.  I root for a team with an awesome offense yet the offense looks terrible.  Those two truths can't coexist and thus, we rationalize that we're just keeping it vanilla to make ourselves feel better about an observed truth that is inconsistent with a believed truth.  Thus,  we're keeping the playbook closed.  It's the bridge between the two 'truths'

Not only are we not improving.  I'd actually say we're regressing.  Offense puts up 34 against Tulane and now 24 against Houston.  Defense collapses in the 2nd half against Tulane and again tonight.  Not good heading in to the toughest part of the schedule.
