Apparently offered him about 3 1/2 months ago ....

It was considered an uphill battle for the Bulls to emerge as a contender for Mathis who plays AAU ball for Adidas-sponsored Team BBC (MD). So it is unlikely that the Bulls staff was caught off guard, and could explain their efforts to get Westminster (Ft. Lauderdale) Academy guard Zach Scott, Jr. on campus for an unofficial visit this month as well as the recent offer to JuCo shooting guard Rashawn Langston of Connors State College.

Langston’s 39 outshines all

An injury-plagued senior season ended on a high note for RaShawn Langston.

The eStem guard scored 39 points to lead Team Johnson to a 113-106 victory over Team Coleman on Tuesday night in the 17th annual All-Metro Basketball Classic at Arkansas Baptist College in Little Rock.

Team Johnson was coached by Little Rock Fair Coach Charlie Johnson. Little Rock Hall Coach Jon Coleman led Team Coleman.

Langston made seven of Team Johnson’s 15 three-pointers.

“He did a great job,” said Johnson, who led Fair to the Class 5A quarterfinals. “I wish I would have had him on my team [at Fair]. We were one player away.”

Langston injured his left knee early in the 2015-2016 season, but he returned to the Mets’ lineup in the second half of their Class 4A-2 Conference season. He was the only eStem player in Tuesday’s game, representing the Mets against several of the top boys basketball players in Pulaski County from Class 7A, 6A, 5A, 4A and 3A schools.

“It’s just a blessing,” Langston said. “I’m just glad I get to play with my friends.”

Team Coleman led 62-59 at halftime. The first half featured three seven-minute quarters. Langston scored 22 of his 39 points in the first half.

The second half, which had a 10-minute fourth quarter and an eight-minute fifth quarter, was back-and-forth, but Team Johnson took control in the fifth quarter.

Fair guard Jerrick Cole keyed a 9-2 fourth-quarter run for Team Johnson to help his team take a 79-75 lead. Langston hit a three-pointer, then Cole followed with four consecutive points to give Team Johnson a 77-75 lead.

Team Johnson led 87-86 going into the fifth and final quarter. Little Rock Hall guard Dayton Artis, who had 26 points for Team Coleman, pulled his team within 94-92, but Langston responded with his sixth three-pointer for a 97-92 lead.

Langston’s seventh three-pointer and a layup helped Team Johnson extend its lead to 108-100 with 3:00 left.

North Little Rock forward Morris Talbert led Team Coleman with 27 points. Baptist Prep center Brandon Vanover had 16 points.

San Jacinto men’s basketball players are vying for a fifth national title and the hope that winning in Hutchinson will overturn the decision to cut the program after next season.

Because of financial constraints, the San Jacinto College’s Board of Trustees voted in November to eliminate the program and three others at the Pasadena, Texas, junior college effective May 2018.

The thought of saving the program, which produced NBA players Steve Francis and Sam Cassell, resonated in the minds of some players as they took to the floor for the first time Tuesday in the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament.

“I think the guys have a little more sense of urgency, but even if the board didn’t vote that way I think we would have played pretty well,” Ravens coach Scott Gernander said. “They might have a chip on their shoulder.”

After a first round bye, the No. 1 seed San Jacinto Ravens made quick work of the No. 17 seed Connors State Cowboys in the second round with a 115-77 win. It was the largest blowout of the tournament so far.

“Coming up here sitting around the hotel the last couple days, you are worried about so many things, you have so many fears, didn’t expect to win by 38,” Gernander said.

The Ravens used a 17-2 run in the first half to go up 39-18. With 3:23 left in the half, a triple by Chris Davis, who led San Jacinto with 21 points, started a 13-5 run that ended that half at 52-25.

“We were down too deep at halftime. We couldn’t get out of it,” Connors State coach Bill Muse said.

The dominance by the No. 1-seeded team continued in the second half, leading by as much as 47 points. Tay Hardy came off the bench and sparked the Ravens’ offense in the last 20 minutes.

Fourteen of Hardy’s 19 points came in the half, including triples on three consecutive Ravens’ scoring possessions.

“I was nervous (before the game),” Hardy said . “I haven’t played for two games with a hand injury.”

Rashawn Langston, who led all scorers with 33 points on 12-of-24 from the field, boosted his team on a short run late in the half. But it wasn’t enough.

“San Jacinto deserves to be the No. 1 team in tournament right now ... I think we ran out of gas having to play yesterday and come back 24 hours later,” Muse said. “They were rested. I’m not sure if we were rested it would have made a difference, either.”

This is San Jacinto’s 21st appearance in the national tournament. The program has won four national championships (1968, 1983, 1984, 1986) in its 55 year history - 2017 or 2018 could be the Ravens last chance.

Part of the reason the board decided to eliminate the men’s program was because of the $15 million price tag to renovate the 1967 Anders Gymnasium where the team plays. The women’s basketball and volleyball and men’s soccer will also be eliminated.

THE QUICK HIT

KEY STAT: San Jacinto had five players score in double digits compared to Connors State’s two. The team has four players averaging double digits this year: Jorden Duffy, Corey Davis, Tay Hardy and Kabir Mohammad.

TURNING POINT: A 17-2 run started by James Kirksey with 17:07 in the first half gave his team a 39-18 lead.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Corey Davis led his team with 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting. He also came up with five steals and brought a unique energy to the floor.

HE SAID IT: “He is always a leader in practice,” coach Scott Gernander said about Davis. “He has that positive energy that you can’t coach.”

UP NEXT: San Jacinto will play No. 8 seed Northwest Florida State at noon on Thursday.
