Looks like over the next 8-10 years, USF will probably play a Football Game vs Notre Dame.

Congrats in advance!

Notre Dame, Big East agree to series of football games

By Mathew Keller

FOR THE TRIBUNE-REVIEW

Saturday, May 28, 2005

Notre Dame and the Big East have agreed to a series of games starting in 2009.

The Irish, a member of the Big East in all sports except football, will play three Big East teams each football season on a home-and-home basis. All eight conference teams will face the Irish.

The news, hinted at for months, came after Big East meetings in Ponte Vedra, Fla., where Notre Dame athletic director Kevin White first confirmed the games.

"We told (Big East Commissioner) Mike Tranghese not to expect us to become members if we did this," said Notre Dame associate athletic director John Heisler. "But the Big East has been a very beneficial relationship for us, and Mike T. encouraged us to do what we could, specifically if we would consider the prospect of making more of a commitment."

Pitt had already signed Notre Dame to an eight-game deal from 2006-2015, in addition to this year's season opener at Heinz Field.

The Panthers' games will count towards Notre Dame's three games each year.

Notre Dame did not ask for a two-for-one deal, Heisler said. Notre Dame will play one of the three Big East teams on a yearly basis -- expected to be Rutgers or Connecticut -- at the Meadowlands in New Jersey, reportedly for recruiting and alumni purposes.

"We have every reason to want the Big East to work," Heisler said. "It was the most attractive and might have been the only option for us to remain independent in football. So if we can do anything to help, why not do it?"

Pitt athletic director Jeff Long said the Panthers were also negotiating with and expected to sign contracts to play several Big Ten schools. Because of Notre Dame and other schools, Long said, the window of opportunity is closing quickly for a series with Penn State.

Pitt did have four of its five non-conference games for 2006 scheduled. Long previously said the Panthers will play Bowling Green, Toledo and Michigan State, all at home.

Heisler and West Virginia Deputy Director of Athletics Mike Parsons said that their respective schools have yet to sign any Big East-Notre Dame contracts, but that talks were in the works.

WVU is expected to play Notre Dame within the first two years of the deal, in 2009 or 2010.

The Big East-Notre Dame deal comes on the heels of the conference's lawsuit settlement with the ACC following the move of Miami, Virginia Tech and Boston College.

The ACC paid the Big East $5 million to cover legal costs and agreed to play nine interconference games between 2008 and '12. Pitt will play in three of those; WVU two.

I don't think they will.  What is more likely is one of Notre Dame's smaller opponents will move their game to the Citrus Bowl for a big paycheck.  ND still gets a game in Florida and gets paid very well to do so.

No....as long as USF is still in the Big East....per the article "All eight conference teams will face the Irish".

New Big East teams to their schedule will start playing ND in 2009.

It might even take till maybe 2012-2014...but I think USF will get there game with ND.

ND is trying to have at least 7 home games per year (sometimes eight) and won't play as many Big 10 power teams, will start playing a much easier schedule overall.

ND wants to go BOWLING annually, plus they make over $5 Million for every HOME GAME!

That's why they might only play 3 "true" road games per year...and one "Neutral" (probably pro-ND crowd) game was well.

I think Norte Dame is betting on a split and the contract would be void.    JMO...They are also looking at an alignment with the Big 10 right now.

Dang Knighttime, You could hit the lotto and if you have to drive to Tampa to get the ticket, you would put some type of negative spin on it. Read the article. As of the date of the article ND will play all the BE schools. That is the conference that USF is in. Therefore as of the date of the article USF will play ND in football at some time in the future.

As of now we will be playing ND in all other sports. ucf will not be. SUCKS to be you. OH WAIT! You are now going to tell us all why it is better for ucf not to play ND!

With citrus sports out there trying to bring in big name teams to the Citrus Bowl now that UCF will be gone, its going to be the highest bidder type stuff.  A smaller BCS team would make much more money selling their game to the Citrus bowl, both teams get to play in Florida, the smaller team gets a huge payday and ND gets the home crowd.

Ok....ND does that once over 5 years.

What will ND do about their other 59 games they have to play?

The article says:

...will play three Big East teams each football season on a home-and-home basis. All eight conference teams will face the Irish.

Why is that so difficult for you to comprehend?  ???

What part of "home-and-home" baisis do you not understand?

I think Norte Dame is betting on a split and the contract would be void.

Notre Dame wants the status quo.  They are going do do everything in their power to stay independent in football and have a solid conference for the rest of their teams to play in.  However, it is possible the Big East will split or the college football landscape (BCS) will be completely different.  If the Big East splits, I don't think their will be any effect on the contract.  There could be some unforeseen circumstances that arise which could void the contract.

They are also looking at an alignment with the Big 10 right now.

Stop the presses!  KNIGHTTIME has breaking news.  ND has been refusing the Big 10 since it was created.  ND will do everything in their power to avoid joining a conference in football.  Joining the Big 10 is the "nuclear option"!  As a matter of fact, they would rather play all eight Big East teams on a home-and-home basis than join the Big Ten.

A smaller BCS team would make much more money selling their game to the Citrus bowl, both teams get to play in Florida, the smaller team gets a huge payday and ND gets the home crowd.

Why would the Notre Dame faithful play in the $hitrus bowl when they can play at Raymond James?  They will have the home field advantage either way.  I am willing to bet if USF played ND at Ray Jay in 2012, over half the stadium would be ND fans.

Another question:

What part of this statement do you not understand?

Notre Dame will play one of the three Big East teams on a yearly basis -- expected to be Rutgers or Connecticut -- at the Meadowlands in New Jersey...

Only ONE Big East team will be playing at a "neutral" site.

Congrats in advance!

Thank you Knight_Light.  Congrats on the stadium.

By the way, what is the over/under for how long this thread will last before it is moved to the "UCF/USF pissing contest" board?

I actually didn't mean anything by my comments.   It just seems like Norte Dame is playing everybody right now.   They are talking to the Big 10 right now about bowl alignments.    It will be interesting if there is a "real contract" in place for Norte Dame to play all BE schools.   Also, can they get out if the deal if the conferences splits?

Just sounds fishy to me...but yes I would like UCF to play Norte Dame in all-sports.   That's a pretty easy decision.

well Notre Dame said months ago they wanted to make their schedule easier... if they can do that and help out the BE at the same time its a win win... BE gets something it needs..  games vs a big time program.. Nd gets what it needs more wins.
