I don't think the expectations or predictions were unrealistic; the coach we had just wasn't able to get it done. BYU is just a slightly above average 7-5 team. We should always expect our team to do well, If these expectations or predictions are not met; it means the coach failed us; not that we were wrong in our expectations or predictions. I expect us to be in a bowl game two years from now, and compete for a conference championship in year 3. If these expectations are not met it would not mean my expectations were not realistic; it would mean the new coach wasn't able to live up to expectations.

How do you feel about the AAC Bowl chances?
belgianbull replied to E.T.'s topic in USF South Florida Bulls Athletics
I am looking at the bowl games for today, and I see that Rice whose record is 5-7 is playing in a bowl game. Is 5-7 really all it takes to get to a bowl game now? Really no excuses to not be playing in a bowl game in year 2, perhaps even year 1 under Coach Golesh. Anything less would be disappointing. -

I forgot about SMU; that would equal out the divisions at 8 teams -

Yes I agree it seemed they panicked. It would have been better to have added UAB and UTSA and then have sat back letting the college football landscape play out. Quality vs quantity. There have been rumors that San Diego State could be joining the Pac 10 ( or whatever they are called right now). Maybe now would have been a good time to have created a national American Conference and have offered programs like Boise state, Colorado State, Air Force, and Fresno State. Also Army and Appalachian State would also have made sense For example have a east division with USF, Temple, East Carolina, Appalachian State, Army, Navy, UAB, Tulane and a west division with UTSA, Memphis, Colorado State, Air Force, Boise State, Tulsa, Fresno State or some variation to equal the numbers out -

Thanks, I had no idea about these games being on today. I must say I am more interested in the UAB, and UTSA bowl games compared to Houston, Cincy, and UCF . UAB and UTSA make more sense then some of the other additions to the conference, and I will be looking forward to when we play them next year. -
USF OCS, dream or reality
belgianbull replied to USFreak's topic in USF South Florida Bulls Athletics
It seems more and more like the OCS will become a reality. I must say I doubted whether Kelly could get it done, and I am impressed. This is the best news for USF in a long time. Now it will be interesting to see renderings. I hope it will look more closely to what San Diego State and Colorado State received versus lets say FAU, and Tulane ( don't mean no disrespect since their stadiums are not bad). It will be a message to the Big 12 that we are committed to our program. Now lets start winning games, and I think our future is bright! -
I agree there were zero reasons as to why Scott couldn't be successful at USF. Scott couldn't make the adjustment from being an OC to HC. I don't buy covid as a reason since that was the same for every program. All the tools were there (fertile recruiting ground, transfer portal, mediocre conference) for him to succeed; he just want able to do it. Also there will be zero reasons as to why Golesh can't be succesfull, especially with a weaker schedule in an even weaker conference. If he is not successful there will be zero excuses as to why.

USF players and the Transfer Portal
belgianbull replied to Jim Johnson's topic in USF South Florida Bulls Athletics
UCF are now in the BIg 12 so its normal that right now they are ahead of us in recruiting. That's why its important to not be left behind next time in realignment. However a good HC will find ways in this new environment to get good recruits to USF. I think the transfer portal can be a benefit to us. We should look at SMU in regards to what they have done in recent times through the transfer portal. -
I like his "I am ready to go; bring it on attitude". He seems to feel that he has all the tools available to him to win now vs 3 years from now. Also seems to feel like he can use the transfer portal to his advantage to built a team that is ready to compete next year. That's good to hear since I feel that the last coach always had the excuses coming. Whether Coach Golesh will be successful here I don't know, but I like his candor and work ethic.

"The time is right for us to explode . . ."
belgianbull replied to E.T.'s topic in USF South Florida Bulls Athletics
I agree. Sometimes its easy to forget that minus the last 4 years we were a program that did a lot of winning. Even Skip Holtz got us wins against Notre Dame, Miami, and a bowl game win against Clemson. Also the bowl game wins against Texas Tech and South Carolina are not that long ago. There is no reason we can't start winning again, and soon. Go Coach Golesh! -
Men's Basketball Turning a Corner?
belgianbull replied to BullyPulpit's topic in USF South Florida Bulls Athletics
Yes my measure would be .500 on the season including conference games. Don't think it will happen either at which point he would have had received ample time to turn the program around ( is it 5 years now?), and he would need to go in my opinion. -
has the new coach announced any of his assistants
belgianbull replied to smazza's topic in USF South Florida Bulls Athletics
I disagree, I think he did some good things last year. I wouldn't mind if Coach Golesh decided to keep him. -
Men's Basketball Turning a Corner?
belgianbull replied to BullyPulpit's topic in USF South Florida Bulls Athletics
Whether we have turned the corner will be decided during conference play. Hard to assess right now due to a weak OOC schedule. But yes its good to see us winning some games after a disastrous start. My measure for success will be .500 on the season. Anything below that and I believe it would be time for Kelly to go a different route and hire a new coach. -

belgianbull replied to smazza's topic in USF South Florida Bulls Athletics
Whatever the decision I hope we hear something soon. The uncertainty can't be good for recruiting. -
I cant blame players for deciding to go to other programs after the last 3 years; although it stings a little that he decided to go to UCF. That said I wish him the best of luck. Coach Golesh has to make the case to our best players that the future of USF is bright. I hope that he can so we can avoid more key departures.

Anything below 4 wins with this schedule would be unacceptable.
-
oh I think I agree with everything you said, and the downfall of USF goes back further then just the last 3 years. But my point is that this is reversable and will come down to our current administration and coaches, and not to the ones that where here in the past. Whether we reverse what has happened to our football program over the last decade will come down to Law, Kelly, and Golesh.
-
I don't see why Judy, Harlan, and Strong are to blame for this. Surely they made mistakes and were bad when they were here, but they aren't to blame for the last 3 years. Now Kelly and Scott; absolutely. A good hire by Kelly 3 years ago, and we wouldn't be talking about possibly losing to North Texas and Rice.

That's absolutely true, and I really don't mean any disrespect to those programs. We did end up proving ourself worthy of being in the Big East. While in the BE we were always good for big upsets and bowl games. Still think though that the American moved to fast after it became clear that Cincy, Houston, and UCF were leaving, and I don't understand why the additions had to all come from the same conference. I would have added UAB, UTSA, and FAU, and then have waited. I think I heard something recently that San Diego State could be joining the PAC 10, maybe now would have been the perfect time to offer Boise State, and Colorado State. Other programs like Army, Appalachian State would also add excitement.

I agree, and in the end whatever ones opinion we are all hoping that the new hires work out. I cant wait to start winning again, and hopefully sooner then later. -

belgianbull replied to hm101's topic in USF South Florida Bulls Athletics
Yes at this point he is probably still assessing what he has and what he needs. That will take some time. My biggest worry about having gone with an OC vs having gone with an experienced HC is connections. Still remains to be seen whether coach Golesh has the connections to bring in high level recruits. So far I have not been impressed with the assistant coaching hires, as it seems to have come down to a small group of candidates; mostly FAU rethreads, or promoting people he knows from Tennessee. However a few big recruits committing to USF could change my mind instantly. -
Wouldn't mind having Army added to our conference. Army and Appalachian State would have been better additions then North Texas, Charlotte, and Rice( and I don't mean any disrespect to those teams; since they could verry well beat us next year).

WBB @ NC State tomorrow
belgianbull replied to CousinRicky's topic in USF South Florida Bulls Athletics
Really impressed with what women's basketball team has accomplished over the last 5 years. They have been really consistent. There is no reason why the football team and the men's basketball team can't do the same.
