Do we know the "extent" of Bench's injury?

Medical red shirts and regular red shirts have no bearing on each other as far as I know. Hence the reason you can have guys get 5th and 6th years of eligibility.

I think CT is very clear and correct about his current position regarding redshirts. You play whomever gives you the best shot at winning and make sure the player is onboard.

A player is eligible for a medical redshirt if the player was forced to redshirt in 2 seasons due to injury.

As a practical matter this means that if a player redshirts as a freshman, and the school documented that the player had an injury which prevented them from playing, and then gets injured in a subsequent year necessitating another redshirt year the player can petition for a 6th year of eligibility. The petition will set out the reasons for both redshirt years and if both were for medical reasons will be granted.

The injury must be documented before the halfway point of the season being claimed as a medical redshirt year.
