Leroy Selmon passed away right before the Notre Dame game, which we won. After that game, we've won 7 out of the last 24.

I feel a piece of USF football died with the passing of Leroy Selmon. A great football player and an even better human being. Without him there would never have been USF football.

RIP Leroy.

Mr. Selmon actually passed away after the Notre Dame game. I don't know if you made the trip to South Bend, but in a nice gesture by Notre Dame we had a moment of silent prayer hoping for his recovery.

Did not make it to South Bend, but you are right....he became ill before the game and passed away after the game. What a great man!

Yeah - walking the streets of Chicago the night before the game and getting a TBO.com text that he passed away and then getting another text like 15 minutes later that he didn't.

It was classy what ND did.

He had a huge impact on our program.

I enjoyed meeting Mr. Selmon in the parking lot of a USF game back in 2007.  What a great man.  He did so much for the USF football team and the community.  RIP.

I was talking to a friend about Lee Roy's passing a while back, and we both came to the realization that the downfall of USF football (both on the field and off the field) started when Lee Roy Selmon left us.

Before he passed:

  • We were a winning football team, and we had just beaten ND on the road.
  • The Big East was strong and negotiating for a large TV contract.
  • TCU was set to join the conference for the next year.

We all know what has happened since then.  I think it is strange that it all started to unfold overnight.  Soon after the news that Lee Roy Selmon was gone, we heard that Pitt and Syracuse were leaving the conference.   This led to where we are now (the AAC).  We all know what happened to our football record since that day.

Coincidence?

A USF Bulls patriarch, and a Tampa legend. We definitely miss his influence.
