Also there are articles on the benefits players get individually, the bowl experience. Economically it seems the winner is the local economy. I agree, IMO the schools, conferencs, bowl organizers, and who's really running the show, espn, need to try to find a way to mitigate some of the costs. One way to do that would be for the bowls to stop requiring the schools to eat the cost of unsold tickets. The big question is. Does the exposure and extra practice time justify the added expense? Its tangible to intangible benefits. Didn't a bowl eligible team turn down an invite recently? Don't know why, just seems like I read it. Might have been to hold out for a better bowl for all I know. But let's not lose sight of the most important aspects of any bowl game, whether it's a quality big time P5-bowl or a Poulan Weed Whacker bowl: ESPN gets to fill a three hour time slot and charge advertisers 'bowl game' rates for that programming. The players get to visit the local children's hospital and money still exchanges hands on Las Vegas Boulevard. And it was LaTech that turned down a bowl game, in hopes that there was a better invite in the offing... http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/8703346/louisiana-tech-bulldogs-9-3-go-bowl-game And they charge ISPs to provide this content for months after the season. Which led to a thought. What happens if the AAC and SunBelt ink a deal, then one of the bigger bowls can't get enough P5 teams to fill its quota. Of course, the AAC team would jump at the chance to play in a P5 bowl slot. But it would be better if they were forced to cancel a P5 bowl becuase they got greedy. Hubris, and all that. That's three hours of broadcast time that has to be recovered. The great thing about all these rules and guidelines, they're flexible. You know, like when the military snatches the head of state, rolls tanks through the streets and it's NOT a military coup. We'll just call it a bowl contingency program. There is a little-known codicil in the P5 College Bowl constitution which gives the dean unlimited power to preserve order in time of campus emergency, and the inability to field eligible bowl teams. Find me a way to revoke America's charter. The time has come for someone to put their foot down. And that foot is me. - Bill Battle Alabama Athletic Director
